WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Senior Kevin Lyons (Braintree, Mass.) rapped out his seventh homer of the season and drove in three runs as Westfield State captured its third Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball title in four seasons with a sweep of a league doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 7-1 in the opener and 8-1 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Senior Jesse Vermeersch (Marlboro, Mass.) tossed a complete-game six-hitter to improve to 5-0 on the season in the opener for the host Owls (27-7, 12-2 MASCAC), who broke open a 1-0 game with a six-run fourth inning rally assisted by three errors as well as bases-loaded walks to senior Jeff Fields (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.).  Senior Ben Wagner (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Jeff Ackerman (Beverly, Mass.) also drove in runs in the first contest for Westfield State, as Vermeersch struck out six in allowing just one run to the visiting Buccaneers (8-19, 3-11 MASCAC), who plated their lone tally in the seventh on an RBI groundout off the bat of junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.).  Junior Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) collected two hits of Massachusetts Maritime’s six hits in the opener, as senior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) allowed just one earned run over 3 1/3 innings in suffering the setback on the mound for the visitors.

Junior Pete Grillo’s (Shrewsbury, Mass.) two-run single in the third inning of the nightcap helped the Owls rally for three runs and extend a 1-0 lead to a four-run advantage in the frame, as Lyons belted a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 6-0 before the hosts added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to close out their scoring.  Lyons, Fields and senior Ben Campbell (Easthampton, Mass.) each finished with two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in the nightcap for Westfield State, which also received RBI from Ackerman and senior Mike Trachtenberg (Newton, Mass.) in support of junior Tymon Muska (Brimfield, Mass.), who scattered six hits and fanned four to improve to 5-0 on the spring.  Murphy and freshman Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) had two hits each in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a seventh inning RBI single off the bat of junior Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.).  Senior Tim Moore (Georgetown, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, allowing five hits and four runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2010 schedule on Monday afternoon by heading to Hartford, Conn. to take on Trinity in a non-league outing that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Westfield State closes out regular season play tomorrow afternoon by traveling to Williamstown, Mass. to take on Williams in a non-league contest that begins at 1:00 p.m.
