NEW LONDON, Conn. --  Freshman Jed Daleiden (Georgetown, Tex.) rapped out a pair of hits, including his first collegiate home run, and drove in three runs to lead Coast Guard to an 11-5 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

The host Bears (6-13) overcame an early 2-1 deficit to take a 3-2 fourth inning lead on an RBI triple by freshman Ed Sella (Silver Spring, Md.), and Coast Guard added four more tallies in the fifth, highlighted by Daleiden’s three-run homer, to take a 7-2 advantage.  The visiting Buccaneers (4-7) closed back to within a pair at 7-5 with a three-run seventh inning outburst keyed by a two-run double off the bat of junior Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) and an RBI single by junior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.), but the Bears iced their triumph with four insurance runs in the eighth on an error, an RBI single by freshman Mike Massaro (Sewell, N.J.) and a double by freshman Nolan Gallagher (New Milford, Conn.) that closed out the scoring for the hosts.

Massaro collected three of Coast Guard’s 13 hits on the afternoon, as sophomore Mike Salerno (Ellicott City, Md.) added a pair of hits and two RBI in the triumph for the Bears.  Vargas, who along with freshman Paul Furtado (Dartmouth, Mass.) had given Massachusetts Maritime its second inning lead with RBI singles, finished with three hits and three RBI in the setback for the Buccaneers, who also received a pair of safeties from Saari as part of a 12-hit attack.

Freshman Nate Toll (Olney, Md.) picked up his third victory in four decisions on the spring for Coast Guard, as he allowed an unearned run and struck out a pair of six innings, while freshman Tyler Vieira (Dumfries, Va.) pitched a pair of scoreless frames and fanned three to earn his second save for the Bears.  Junior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, fanning four in five innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Providence, R.I. on Thursday afternoon to take on Johnson & Wales in a non-league outing that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Coast Guard hosts MIT in a NEWMAC twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field that begins at Noon.
