SALEM, Mass. --  Junior Ryan Kane (Nahant, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in four runs to lead Salem State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon by scores of 9-1 in the opener and 7-3 in the nightcap in games played at Alumni Field.

The host Vikings (13-14, 3-5 MASCAC) jumped out to a 6-1 lead through three innings of the opening contest, as a two-run single by senior Steve Mucci (Walkill, N.Y.) coupled with a run-scoring groundout by Kane and an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Chris Cocci (Wakefield, R.I.) sparked the rally.  Kane added a two-run single to highlight a three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth of the opener that closed out the scoring for Salem State, and senior Joe Galindo (Monument, Colo.) took care of the rest on the mound for the hosts, firing a complete-game three-hitter and fanning nine to improve to 3-3 on the season.  Cocci and senior Troy Ingemi (Malden, Mass.) collected three hits each in the opener for the Vikings, who also received two safeties each from Galindo and freshman Sam Perkins (Milford, Mass.) as part of a 14-hit attack.  Freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) drove in the lone run in the opening game setback for the visiting Buccaneers (6-13, 2-6 MASCAC), as junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) allowed seven earned runs and fanned one over five innings of work in taking the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime to fall to 2-3 on the spring.

Salem State grabbed a 6-1 edge again in the early innings of the nightcap, as a two-run triple off the bat of junior Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, Mass.) highlighted a four-run first inning tally and Kane’s RBI single plated one of two second inning runs for the hosts.  The Buccaneers crept back to within 6-3 in the third on an RBI double by senior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) and a run-scoring single by junior Ross Hickey (Centerville, Mass.), but the Vikings iced their triumph with an insurance run in the fifth when Ingemi drew a bases-loaded walk.  Cocci, Kane, Galindo and Valcourt each had two hits as part of a 10-hit Salem State attack in the nightcap, as sophomore Matt Kerr (East Freetown, Mass.) picked up his fourth win in seven decisions on the year for the Vikings by striking out nine over 6 1/3 innings of work.  Albano went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two hits each off the bats of Murphy and junior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) as part of a 10-hit attack.  Senior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) allowed six earned runs and fanned five over five innings in suffering the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Waltham, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Lasell in a non-league outing that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State hosts Gordon in a non-league contest Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field that begins at 3:00 p.m.
