WALTHAM, Mass. -- Junior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.) belted a two-run homer and drove in three runs to back a complete-game four-hit shutout effort on the mound by sophomore Louis Ottino (Plymouth, Mass.) that lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-0 non-league college baseball victory over Lasell Wednesday afternoon at Stein Diamond.
Wiggin’s two-run blast in the top of the fourth (his third of the season) that followed a lead-off single off the bat of junior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.) gave the visiting Buccaneers (7-13) the only runs they would need on the day, as Wiggin added an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly that plated sophomore Kyle Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) to close out the scoring. Ottino took care of the rest on the hill, as he scattered four singles and struck out a career-high eight to pick up his first collegiate victory and improve to 1-1 on the spring for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a pair of hits from Saari in notching the triumph in a tidy 1:45.
Sophomore Josh Sullivan (Rockland, Mass.) reached base twice with a single and a walk in the setback for the host Lasers (5-22), as fellow sophomore Matt Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.) allowed just four hits and struck out five over eight innings to take in the setback on the mound for the Lasers and fall to 0-3 on the spring.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wentworth in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Lasell heads to Henniker, N.H. to take on New England College in a non-league contest that begins at 3:30 p.m.
