BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  Junior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) rapped out three extra-base hits and drove in three runs to back six innings of four-hit ball on the mound by fellow junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) as Massachusetts Maritime gained a split of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with Bridgewater State Thursday afternoon by notching a 15-12 nightcap victory in games played at Alumni Park.  The host Bears rode a complete-game five-hitter by junior Brian Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) in posting a 7-1 opening game triumph.

Freshman Aram Mulhern’s (Taunton, Mass.) two-run single highlighted a five-run opening frame in the nightcap for the visiting Buccaneers (8-17, 3-9 MASCAC), who took a 6-2 advantage into the middle inning and extended that margin to 9-2 with a three-run fifth inning rally on run-scoring singles off the bats of senior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) and junior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.) as well as a sacrifice fly by junior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime plated what would prove to be six key insurance runs in the top of the seventh on Levitre’s two-run double, an RBI single by junior Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.), a throwing error, and a pair of wild pitches to take a 15-4 lead into the bottom of the inning, as the host Bears (17-16, 8-4 MASCAC) clawed back on a pair of two-run doubles by junior Paul Politosopoulos (Foxboro, Mass.) and freshman Tory Buck (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) as well as a two-run single off the bat of junior Ian Williams (Taunton, Mass.) in closing to within the margin of the final score with just one out in the frame but got no closer.

Musk, Wiggin and junior Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) each had two hits as part of a 14-hit attack in the nightcap triumph for the Buccaneers, who also received an RBI off the bat of freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.).  Murphy scattered four hits and allowed three earned runs while fanning one to improve to 3-3 on the season for Massachusetts Maritime, which recorded four extra base hits in the victory.  Williams went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs in the second game setback for Bridgewater State, which collected 10 hits in the nightcap, as freshman Jonathan Surette (Lynn, Mass.) allowed eight hits and four earned runs over four innings with four strikeouts to fall to 1-3 for the Bears.

Bridgewater State provided Guillotte with all of the runs he would need in a three-run first inning outburst in the opener that was highlighted by a two-run single by freshman Keane Costa (Fairhaven, Mass.), and after junior Ross Hickey’s (Centerville, Mass.) RBi single enabled Massachusetts Maritime to close back to 3-1 in the fourth, the Bears plated two runs in both the fourth and fifth frames on RBI singles by Politsopoulos and freshman John Garabedian (Mansfield, Mass.), a run-scoring double by junior Greg Steele (North Dighton, Mass.) and an RBI triple off the bat of senior Mark Claffey (Bellingham, Mass.) to close out the scoring.  Guillotte fanned four in allowing four hits to improve to 3-3 on the mound for the hosts, as Musk, Levitre and sophomore William Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) joined Hickey with hits in the setback for the Buccaneers.  Sophomore Louis Ottino (Plymouth, Mass.) fell to 1-2 on the hill for the visitors, as he allowed nine hits and fanned one in five innings of work for the visitors.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Westfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Westfield State in a MASCAC doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Bridgewater State travels to Worcester, Mass. to square off with Worcester State in a MASCAC twinbill that also begins at Noon.
