BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Kyle Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in three runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 14-5 non-league college baseball victory over Becker Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The host Buccaneers (3-4) used a seven-run outburst with two outs in the third inning to take control of the contest after the visiting Hawks (1-6) plated three in their first at-bat to grab an early cushion.  A pair of two-run singles by juniors Ross Hickey (Centerville, Mass.) and Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) highlighted the third inning for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received RBI singles off the bats of juniors Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.) and Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.).  The Buccaneers countered a pair of single Becker runs in the fifth and sixth frames by plating two more tallies in the fifth on Armstrong’s RBI single and a steal of home by junior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.), and the hosts closed out the scoring with four sixth inning runs, highlighted by Armstrong’s two-run single as a well as sacrifice flies off the bats of Musk and junior Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, Mass.).

Levitre, Hickey and junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) joined Armstrong with three hits each in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, which rapped out 17 hits on the afternoon, including a pair from Vargas, who along with Musk, Rodriguez and Hickey drove in two runs each.  Sophomore Weston Meehan (Thomson, Ga.) rapped out a pair of hits in the setback for Becker, including a two-run double in the first inning, while fellow sophomore Ben Keough (Attleboro, Mass.) added a pair of safeties for the Hawks, who collected nine hits on the day.

Freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, as he scattered six hits and struck out three over the first five innings of action to improve to 1-1 on the season, while freshman Joe Franchi (Millbury, Mass.) allowed five earned runs and fanned three over 2 2/3 innings in his collegiate debut for Becker in suffering the setback.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Newbury in a non-league doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Becker travels to Worcester, Mass. tomorrow afternoon for a non-league match-up with WPI that begins at 3:30 p.m.
