NORTH ADAMS, Mass. --  Junior Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) collected a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs, including an RBI single that sparked a five-run seventh inning outburst, to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 9-5 victory over MCLA in the opening game of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Joe Zavattaro Field.  The host Trailblazers received a complete-game three-hitter from junior Sean Hermance (Elizaville, N.Y.) to post a 6-0 nightcap triumph and gain a split of the twinbill.

Vargas snapped a 4-4 with his tie-breaking single to center in the seventh frame of the opener for the visiting Buccaneers (5-8, 2-2 MASCAC), who also received an RBI bunt from junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Tim Moore (Georgetown, Mass.) during the rally.  Massachusetts Maritime had taken an early 3-0 third inning lead on RBI doubles by Vargas and senior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) that sandwiched a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.), and the visitors extended that margin to 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Albano before the host Trailblazers (6-10, 1-3 MASCAC) evened matters with an RBI single by junior Osiris Mendez (Queens, N.Y.) in the fourth and a three-run fifth inning rally that was highlighted by junior Mike Meaney’s (North Adams, Mass.) RBI single, setting up the Buccaneers’ seventh inning heroics.

Vargas, Albano and junior Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.) each had two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in the opener for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up his second victory in three decisions by going the distance in scattering eight hits and allowing three earned runs while fanning a pair.  Junior Paul Procopio (Pittsfield, Mass.) had two of MCLA’s eight hits in the opening contest, as senior James Greeley (Auburndale, Mass.) allowed nine hits and six earned runs while striking out six to fall to 2-3 on the mound for the Trailblazers.

The Trailblazers scored the only runs they would need in the nightcap in their first at-bat on an RBI double by junior Joe Parillo (West Springfield, Mass.) and a run-scoring single by Mendez, and Parillo’s RBI single in the third extended that margin to 3-0.  MCLA plated two more in the fifth on run-scoring singles off the bats of Parillo and Meaney in the fifth, and junior John Ripepi’s (Amsterdam, N.Y.) RBI single in the sixth capped the scoring for the hosts.  Hermance allowed three singles to Levitre, Murphy and junior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.) in fanning two to go to 3-2 on the mound for MCLA, while senior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) suffered the setback on the hill for the Buccaneers, allowing four earned runs and striking out two to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Emerson in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while MCLA entertains Williams in a non-league contest on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Zavattaro Field at 4:00.
