EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  Senior Jon Melendez (Providence, R.I.) collected a pair of hits, including a double that sparked a three-run eighth inning rally, to lift Johnson & Wales to a 4-1 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon at Pierce Field.

Melendez snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring on a throwing error to spark the host Wildcats (5-22), as his RBI two-bagger in the fifth tied the contest after the visiting Buccaneers (4-8) had grabbed the early advantage on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) in the third inning.  The score remained deadlock until the bottom of the eighth when Melendez again provided the heroics, and Johnson & Wales added a pair of insurance tallies on an RBI double off the bat of sophomore Zach Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.) that was followed by an RBI single by junior Bryan Sayers (Chelmsford, Mass.) that closed out the scoring.

Junior Matt Yaeger (Glendale, Ariz.) picked up the win to even his record at 1-1 on the spring with three scoreless innings for the Wildcats in relief of sophomore Mike Wood (Hudson, Mass.), who allowed three hits and fanned three over the first six innings of action.  Junior Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) recorded two of the six hits registered in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as fellow junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) tossed his second straight three-hitter over 7 2/3 innings of work, as he carried a one-hitter into the eighth and fanned four in suffering the tough-luck setback to fall to 1-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime closes out a four-game road swing on Saturday afternoon by heading to North Adams, Mass. to take on MCLA in a MASCAC doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m., while Johnson & Wales travels to Nashua, N.H. on Saturday afternoon for a GNAC twinbill with Rivier that begins at Noon.
