BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Corey Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in three runs to lead Framingham State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 6-4 in the opener and 6-1 in the nightcap in games played Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
The visiting Rams (14-12, 5-1 MASCAC) scored all of their runs in both contests in the second inning, as Ketterer and junior Danny Chaisson (Watertown, Mass.) each collected RBI singles in the opening game rally that included junior Joe Sheehan (Burlington, Mass.) forcing in a run on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and additional tallies coming on a passed ball, a wild pitch and a throwing error. The host Buccaneers (6-11, 2-4 MASCAC) plated single tallies in the second and third frames of the opener on a pair of RBI groundouts by senior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) and junior Ross Hickey (Centerville, Mass.), and Massachusetts Maritime closed back to within a pair in its final at-bat on an RBI triple off the bat of junior Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.) and a run-scoring single by junior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.). The hosts had the tying runs on base following Levitre’s single, but Framingham State junior Matthew Magazine (Marlboro, Mass.) induced a pop-up to end the contest and record his first save of the season.
Ketterer collected three of nine hits in the opening game triumph for the Rams, who also received two hits from Chaisson in support of junior Charlie Spear (Exeter, N.H.), who picked up his second win of the season by scattering six hits and allowing an earned run while fanning six over six innings. Levitre and junior Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.) each had two hits as part of an eight-hit attack in the opener for the Buccaneers, as freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) allowed four earned runs over the first inning-plus to fall to 2-2 on the mound for the hosts.
Ketterer gave Framingham State the only runs they would need in the nightcap by igniting a two-run six-run second inning rally with a two-run single, as freshman Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.) added a two-run single as well for the Rams, which capped the frame with a two-run double off the bat of junior Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass.). Junior Tommy Lindberg (Stratford, Conn.) took care of the rest on the mound for the visitors, as he went the distance and lost his shutout in the seventh on a fielding error in scattering seven hits and fanning five to improve to 3-1 on the season. Ketterer paced an eight-hit attack with two more nightcap safeties for Framingham State, while Levitre collected two of Massachusetts Maritime’s seven hits in the second game and suffered the setback on the mound in allowing six runs and striking out three to fall to 0-3 on the spring for the Buccaneers.
Massachusetts Maritime travels to Salem, Mass. on Monday afternoon for a MASCAC doubleheader with Salem State that begins at Noon, while Framingham State hosts Westfield State in a MASCAC twinbill on Monday afternoon in Framingham, Mass. that begins at 1:00 p.m.
