BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, Mass.) belted a homer and drove in four runs as Massachusetts Maritime notched a 13-5 nightcap victory over Lyndon State to gain a split of a non-league college baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as the visiting Hornets used a three-run fifth frame to post a 4-3 triumph in the opener of the twinbill.

The host Buccaneers (1-3) rapped out 18 hits in the second game and overcame a 3-2 third inning deficit by plating five runs, highlighted by Wiggin’s two run homer (his second of the day) as well as RBI doubles off the bats of junior Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime added four more tallies in the fourth frame on a two-run triple by Wiggin, an RBI groundout by Sullivan and a run-scoring double by junior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.), to take an 11-4 lead, as a sacrifice fly by Sullivan coupled with an RBI double by freshman Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) in the fifth closed out the hosts’ scoring.

Senior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) went 4-for-4 in the nightcap triumph for the Buccaneers, who also received three hits each from Rodriguez, Levitre and junior Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.).  Genereux joined Wiggin with two hits for the hosts in support of junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.), who scattered nine hits and fanned six over five innings to pick up the win on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime.  Freshman Shayne Kirby (Fairfax, Vt.) rapped out three hits in the second game setback for Lyndon State (2-5), which also received a pair of hits from senior Ben Clark (Brattleboro, Vt.) as part of a nine-hit attack.  Freshman Patrick Hilton (Lyndonville, Vt.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Hornets.

The Buccaneers grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead in the opener on RBI singles by Levitre and Sullivan, but Lyndon State took the lead for good with a three-run fifth frame, as sophomore Zach Maerder’s (Woodsville, N.H.) RBI double plated the first Hornet run and Clark gave the visitors a 3-2 edge with a two-run single.  Junior Jake Ainsworth (Fairfax, Vt.) plated a key insurance run in the top of the seventh with a bases loaded walk, and he came on to record the final two outs in the bottom of the frame for his second save of the season in support of sophomore Shane O’Donnell (Groton, Vt.), who scattered seven hits and fanned seven to earn the victory for the visitors, who received half of their four hits from Maerder.  Albano collected two safeties in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as senior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) allowed just one earned run and struck out nine over 6 1/3 innings of work in suffering the tough-luck setback.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Rivier in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Lyndon State will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Hornets travel to New London, Conn. for a non-league twinbill with Mitchell that begins at 2:00 p.m.
