Bucs Lose to Cougars and Bulldogs in Road Tri-Match

FRANKLIN, Mass -- The Buccaneers traveled to Franklin for their final tri-match of the season against out of conference Clark and Dean. The Buccaneers dropped the first match to the Cougars 3-0 and then to the hosts Dean in straight sets, 3-0.

 

Match One

The Basics

Final: Cougars 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-14)

Records: Clark (13-10)

               Maritime (4-18)

 

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Gemma Geisler led Maritime with six kills in the match. Izabella Mackintosh and Marlo Stark recorded five kills each. 
  • Shayla Narodowg led the Bucs with 13 assists.
  • Stark had the only two aces for the team in the loss.
  • Narodowg led the match defensively with 11 digs. Stark picked up 10 digs of her own.
  • Narodowg also led the Buccaneers at the net with a block and a block assist. Chloe Johnson had two block assists and Mackintosh added one.
  • In total, Maritime recorded 21 kills with a -.024 hitting percentage, 18 assists, two aces, 39 digs, and three total blocks.

Clark

  • Winifre Gakidis led all players with nine kills. Victoria Pastor had seven kills to her credit. 
  • Julia Dopazo had 17 assists and Yvanna Torres recorded 12.
  • Yumeng Liu had six aces in the match.
  • Liu and Dopazo each had seven digs to lead the Cougars on the defensive end.
  • Clark recorded no solo blocks but did have 10 block assists with four players each recording two.
  • In total, Clark had 33 kills, a .236 hitting percentage, 31 assists, 11 aces, 36 digs, and five total blocks.

How It Happened

The strong Clark Cougars made it a tough first match of the day for the Buccaneers. In the first set they jumped out to a 10-point lead, 15-5, and then extended the lead to 16, 22-6. Maritime scored three more points and the Cougars added three of their own to take the first set, 25-9, and a 1-0 match lead. 

In set two, the Bucs kept the score close and had a lead, 10-8, midway through the game. Clark then went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Cougars beared down and scored 11 of the next 14 points to win set two, 25-14, and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three went much like set one with the Cougars controlling the scoreboard. The Bucs fell behind 14-7 halfway though the game and would go on to score seven more points but the Cougars scored the 11 they needed to win the game, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

 

Match Two

The Basics

Final: Bulldogs 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16)

Records: Dean (7-19)

               Maritime (4-19)

 

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Gemma Geisler once again led the Buccaneers offensively with eight kills in the match against Dean.
  • Shayla Narodowg led the team in assists with 13, in aces with four, and defensively with six digs.
  • Audrey Manning and Ashleigh Catlett each had five digs.
  • At the net, Sydney McCarthy and Narodowg were each credited with a block assist.
  • In total, Maritime had 20 kills, a -.060 hitting percentage, 18 assists, seven aces, 29 digs, and one total block.

Dean

  • Olivia Mackinnon led all players with 10 kills. Sari Albury added seven.
  • Carly Rettberg had 14 assists to lead the match.
  • Skylar Raskevitz and Albury each had three aces in the win.
  • Defensively, Mackinnon had 12 digs and Raskevitz tallied 10.
  • At the net, Dean got one solo block from Chloe DeMaio and Albury tallied four assists.
  • In total, Dean had 32 kills, a .288 hitting percentage, 27 assists, 10 aces, 37 digs and six total blocks.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set though they couldn't hold on as Dena went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 7-7. The Bucs retook the lead and opened it up to five points as they led 13-8 midway through the game. The Bulldogs then scored the next six points to take a 14-13 lead. From there, the teams exchanged points and were tied 17-17 late on. Dean went on to outscore the Bucs 8-1 to take the first set, 25-18, and a 1-0 lead in the match.

In set two, Dean went ahead big to begin the game taking an 8-1 advantage. Maritime closed the gap to three points, 13-10, which the Bulldogs answered by extending the lead back out to five. They kept their five-point advantage and opened it to seven winning the set, 25-15, and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three was a combination of the first two sets. Maritime took an early lead like in set one, held on to the lead until they led 11-9 and then the Bulldogs took over scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 17-12 lead. The Bucs scored four points in the mix down the stretch but couldn't come back against Dean as the Bulldogs took the third set, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.

 

What's Next

Maritime will play their final non-conference match of the season on Thursday, November 2nd on the road against Fisher College in Boston at 7pm.
