Bucs Win First Set in 3-1 Loss at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers volleyball team hosted Rhode Island College on Monday evening and after the Bucs took the first set, the Anchorwomen won three straight sets to win the match 3-1 over Maritime.

 

The Basics

Final: Anchorwomen 3, Buccaneers 1 (18-25, 25-9, 25-9, 25-13)

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Junior captain Marlo Stark led the Buccaneers in kills with 11. Ashleigh Catlett and Izabella Mackintosh each recorded seven. 
  • Sophomore captain Shayla Narodowg tallied a team-high 27 assists in the loss. 
  • Defensively, Audrey Manning led the team with 18 digs. Catlett and Stark each had 13.
  • At the net, Chloe Johnson and Narodowg each had two block assists. Mackintosh and Sydney McCarthy had one block assist each.
  • In total, Maritime recorded 31 kills with a .032 hitting percentage. They had 31 assists, three aces, 57 digs and three total blocks.

Rhode Island College

  • Sarina Marines led the match in kills with 13. Rhiannon Hodovanec was in double digits with 10 kills.
  • Yuleisy Alvelo led the match in assists with 33 in the victory.
  • Hodovanec recorded four aces in the match.
  • Defensively, Hodovanec had a match-high 18 digs. Carolyn Bailey had 10 of her own and Marines had 10.
  • Megan Philbrick recorded a match-high three solo blocks, Marines tallied two. Philbrick and Marina Colonis each had a block assists.
  • In total, the Anchorwomen recorded 46 kills with a .313 hitting percentage. They had 44 assists, 10 aces, 63 digs and seven total blocks.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers fell behind in the first set early and were behind 6-1 to start things off. Down five, the Bucs battled back and eventually tied the set up at 12-12 after an 11-6 run. Maritime went on to score in chunks never trailing in the game again. Up 19-18, Manning and crew won six points in a row to win the set, 25-18, and take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

In game two, RIC took an early 2-0 lead and the Bucs erased it. The Anchorwomen then score six of the next seven points to take a 9-3 advantage in the game. The Buccaneers mixed in a point but their guests scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 25-5 lead. Maritime scored four more points but RIC scored the five they needed to win the game, 25-9, and tie the match at 1-1.

Set three started slow for the Bucs again as RIC jumped out to a 9-2 early lead. The Anchorwomen scored in big spurts and up 16-8 outscored Maritime 9-1 down the stretch to win the game, 25-9, and take a 2-1 match lead.

Rhode Island College went for the three straight set comeback in the fourth set starting off with an 8-2 lead to start the game. The Buccaneers picked it up in the set but found themselves down 19-9 late. RIC outscored the Bucs 6-4 at the end of the game to win the set, 25-13, and take the match, 3-1.

The Buccaneers travel to MCLA on Saturday for a conference match with the Trailblazers at 1pm in North Adams, Ma.
