Bucs Lose in Straight Sets to Nichols on the Road

DUDLEY, Mass -- For the second time this season, the Bucs took on Nichols on the volleyball court, this time at the home of the Bison. On Friday evening the Bucs lost in straight sets, 3-0.

 

The Basics

Inside the Numbers

Maritime

  • Marlo Stark led the way for the Buccaneers with five kills. Shayla Narodowg and Ashleigh Catlett each had three kills in the loss.
  • Narodowg led the team in assists with 11 in the match.
  • Stark had a team-high two aces and Erin Dolan had one.
  • Defensively, Audrey Manning led Maritime in digs with 10, Stark had seven of her own.
  • Izabella Mackintosh had the only solo block in the match and she combined for a block with Gemma Geisler
  • In total, the Bucs had 16 kills, recorded a -.091 hitting percentage, had 14 assists, three aces, 30 digs, and two blocks.

Nichols

  • Haylee Granato and Ryley Plourde led the way in the match with nine kills each.
  • Kya Burdier had 24 assists in the win.
  • Cassie Durocher had a match-high four aces for the Bison. 
  • Defensively, Liz Diorio had 14 digs.
  • At the net, Granato and Plourde each had a solo block. Plourde, Melina Bezati, and Maille Ianniruberto each had two block assists. Luna Colozzo and Granato had one block assist each.
  • In total, the Bison had 24 kills with a .222 hitting percentage. They recorded 32 assists, eight aces, 44 digs, and five total blocks.

How It Happened

In the first game, Nichols took an early 8-0 lead over the Bucs. Maritime attempted to chip away at the deficit but the early Bison lead was too much for them to erase. Nichols held no smaller than an eight point lead in the game as they went on to win 25-12 to take a 1-0 match lead.

The Bison took an early big lead in game two going up 4-0 early and eventually 8-1. This time, the Buccaneers didn't let them get away easily, eventually tying the game up at 13-13. Though the Bucs never took a lead they stayed within two points late into the set up until the Bison held a 21-19 advantage. Nichols outscored the Bucs 4-3 from there to win the set, 25-22, and take a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set, Maritime opened with a point to take a 1-0 lead. The teams were close in the early stages of the game as they tied at 2-2, Nichols took a 4-3 lead, and then they started to pull away. The Bucs stayed within two points up to a 7-5 score in favor of the Bison. From there, Nichols scored five in a row to take a 12-5 lead. Maritime scored three more times to the Bison three as they trailed 15-8 midway through the game. Nichols then scored the next nine points and led 24-9. Staring down a match point, the Bison gave up two more points to the Buccaneers before scoring the final point of the game and the match, winning the game 25-11, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers next match is on Monday, October 2nd at home against Rhode Island College in non-conference play at 7pm.
