Bucs Shutout by Owls in Final Home Game

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted Westfield State in their final home game of the 2023 season on Thursday evening on Taylor's Point. Prior to the match, the Bucs celebrated the career of senior Izabella Mackintosh for her dedication and commitment to the Maritime volleyball program over the last four years. In the conference match with the Owls, the Bucs fell in straight sets, 3-0.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Bella Mackintosh led the Buccaneers offensively with five kills in the match. Marlo Stark posted four of her own.
  • Shayla Narodowg led the Bucs in assists with 10.
  • Audrey Manning and Stark each had two aces in the loss.
  • Manning led the team defensively in nine digs. 
  • Mackintosh and Narodowg each had a block at the net. Sydney McCarthy and Narodowg each had a block assist.
  • In total, Maritime had 14 kills, a -.108 hitting percentage, 14 assists, five aces, 28 digs, and three total blocks.

Westfield

  • Bridgette McAndrews led all players in the match with 12 kills. 
  • Julia Dangel-Garcia had a match-high 15 assists. Morgan Dority had 12 assists of her own.
  • Allie Hill had four aces on the serve for the Owls.
  • Michaela O'Connor had 10 digs on the defensive end in the win.
  • Sarah Bingham had two solo block. Three other players had one each. 
  • Bingham had three block assists, Bartiet had two and Olivia Harris recorded one.
  • In total, Westfield totaled 35 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, 33 assists, 11 aces, 42 digs, and eight total blocks.

How It Happened

Westfield took an early 3-0 lead in the first set and though the Bucs put up a point, the wosl went on a 9-1 run to start the match. Down 11-3, the Buccaneers scored four points in a row to cut the deficit to four points, 11-7. Westfield went on to score 10 of the next three points taking a 21-10 lead late in the game. Maritime added two runs of three points each to the set and down 24-16 the Owls scored the final point of the game to win 25-16 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Owls led early again in set two taking a quick 3-1 lead. They extended their lead to six points, 9-3, and Maritime scored three of their own to cut it back to three points, 9-6. Westfield went on to outscore the Bucs 16-3 throughout the rest of the game, including an eight-point run to end the game and won 25-9 and took a 2-0 match lead.

The Bucs scored first in the third set but quickly fell behind 7-1. The teams traded points and went back and forth with the Owls scoring in chunks at times. Maritime mustered 11 points and the Owls won the third set, 25-11, to take the match, 3-0.

Maritime is at Dean College on Saturday for their next two matches against Clark at 1pm and the Bulldogs at 3pm.
