Bucs Drop Season Opener to Lasers on the Road

NEWTON, Mass -- On Friday evening, the Buccaneers volleyball team opened their season on the road against the Lasell Lasers. In the team's first game of the season, the Bucs fell to Lasell by a 3-0 final. 

 

The Basics

Final: Lasers 3, Buccaneers 0 (11-25, 14-25, 12-25)

Record: Lasell 1-0

             Maritime 0-1

 

Inside the Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Sophomore Chloe Johnson and freshman Ashleigh Catlett each had four kills for the Buccaneers in the opener. 
  • Senior captain Izabella Mackintosh and junior captain Marlo Stark both had three kills in the loss. 
  • Sophomore captain Shayla Norodowg recorded a match-high 12 assists for Maritime.
  • Audrey Manning, Mackintosh, and Stark each had a service ace in the match. 
  • Defensively, Manning led the team in digs with six. Narodowg added five. Freshman Gemma Geisler and Catlett each had four digs. 
  • At the net, Catlett and Johnson combined for a block. 

For The Lasers

  • Juiana Medini led the Lasers offensively with seven kills. 
  • Sydney Katz and Saige Cambonga-Meyers tied for the team-lead in assists with 11 each. 
  • McKenna McCool recorded a match-high seven aces in the win.
  • Defensively, Maddie Carro tallied seven digs.
  • Madalyn Scully recorded the only solo block of the match. 

How It Happened

The Lasers, who were near the top of the GNAC in 2022, took an early lead in the first set. The Buccaneers kept the first game within four points midway through with Lasell taking a 12-8 advantage. The Bucs stayed within five until they trailed 16-11 and then the Lasers took over and scored the next nine consecutive points to win the set 25-11 giving them a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Buccaneers kept it close early once again and were within reach in the middle of the game. The Lasers took a small lead towards the back end of the set and went on to win the game 25-14, the Bucs highest scoring set of the match. The Lasers grabbed a 2-0 lead.

The third set was more of the same. Maritime kept it close early and the Lasers made a late push to take a commanding lead and take the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will play their home opener on Wednesday, September 6th at 7pm against the Nichols Bison. The matchup will be the first of two between the Bucs and Bison this season.
