Bucs Battle Rams in Conference Loss

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Buccaneers volleyball hosted their Dig Pink match on Wednesday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletics center as they hosted Framingham State in conference play. With a packed gym and over $2,000 raised for the Sideout Foundation to aid in their battle against breast cancer, the Bucs battled hard against the Rams ultimately losing the match, 3-0.

 

The Basics

Final: Rams 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18)

Records: Framingham State (13-6, 2-1)

               Maritime (3-13, 0-3)

 

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Junior captain Marlo Stark led the bucs in kills with 10 and defensively with 12 digs.
  • Sophomore captain Shayla Narodowg led the team in assists with 18 on the night and had 10 digs defensively and three kills on the offensive end.
  • Stark and Ashleigh Catlett each had two aces in the loss.
  • At the net, Chloe Johnson totalked four blocks with two solos and two assists. Izabella Mackintosh added two block assists with Johnson.
  • In total, the Bucs recorded 23 kills with a .056 hitting percentage, 23 assists, five aces, 48 digs, and four blocks.

Framingham State

  • Anna Szymanski led all players with 13 kills, Natalie Reynolds had 11 of her own.
  • Stella Bailey racked up 39 assists in the win.
  • Carly Beaulieu had three aces in the match and led the team defensively with 21 digs.
  • At the net, Reynolds and Hailey Sanders each had a solo block and Reynolds and Szymanski each had a block assist.
  • In total, the Rams tallied 44 kills, a .340 hitting percentage, 43 assists, nine aces, 64 digs, and three blocks.

How It Happened

The Rams took an early lead in the first set that the Bucs quickly erased and took a lead of their own, 4-3. The teams stayed tied through a 5-5 score and then the Rams went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 advantage. The teams traded points until Maritime got into double digits and trailed 17-11 midway through the first game. The bucs would only score three more points to the Rams eight through the rest of the set with Framingham taking the first game 25-14.

Set two started with a 6-0 stretch for the Rams until the Bucs broke it up. Framingham kept momentum and jumped out to a 10-point lead, 12-2. Maritime battled back late and when the Rams led 24-12, staring a game two win in the face the Bucs rattled off six straight points on a Stark serving run that included two aces to cut the Rams lead to 24-18. Maritime had an unforced error on the final play of the game and lost, 25-18, falling behind in the match 2-0.

A little de ja vu reared its head in game three with the Rams taking a 5-0 advantage off the bat and eventually led the Buccaneers 8-1. With Catlett on the serve, Maritime scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to one point, 9-8. The Bucs hung around with their guests and even took 12-11 and 13-12 leads. Framingham tied the set at 13-13 then scored the next four points to take a 17-13 lead. The Bucs fell behind by five late, 20-15, and though they scored three more times, the Rams scored the five they needed to win the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are on the road for their next matches on Sunday, October 15th when they travel to Lesley for a tri-match with the Lynx and the Maine-Presque Isle Owls beginning at 1pm.
