How It Happened

Each of the four sets were competitive and down to the wire and that pattern began in the first set as the teams had to go over the 25 points needed to win a set by two. The Bucs cruised out to a 6-0 advantage in the first set before the Colonels scored three unanswered. Maritime increased their lead to five, 8-3, and again Curry went on a run, this time for four points to make it 8-7 Bucs. Coach Clarks bunch held a three-point lead late into the game as they were up 19-16 after a Curry attack error. Maritime's lead dwindled but they held strong. After leading 21-19, Curry took a 24-21 lead and were one point from taking the first game. The Buccaneers stormed back to make the score 24-24, and although Curry took a 25-24 lead, the Bucs once again bunched their points scoring three in a row to win the first set 27-25.

In the second set, the Bucs, once again, took a quick lead and led by three, 5-2, early on. Curry would take their first lead of the game much earlier in set two grabbing a 10-9 lead midway through. The Colonels eventually opened the lead to three points, leading the Bucs 14-11. Maritime held their ground and tied the game up at 16-16. Curry pushed the Bucs to the brink again in set two and the teams were tied at 22-22 late on. Maritime went on to score three of the next four points, keeping the game in regulation, to win 25-23.

Down 2-0 in the match, the three-win Colonels didn't let the Buccaneers earn their first win easily. Though Maritime took another early lead, 4-0, Curry climbed back into the third game eventually taking a 17-14 lead midway through. Curry held their lead, even if it was just by one point, up until the Buccaneers tied the game at 23-23. From there, the teams traded points and it took extra points to finish the game with Curry pulling ahead at the end, 30-28, to cut the Bucs lead to 2-1 in the match.

In the fourth set, Curry took their earliest lead in the match. After the Bucs went up 2-0, the Colonels screamed back to take a 5-3 lead, a lead they would build and led by four, 10-6, midway through the game. Curry held the lead but the Bucs grabbed the momentum and tied the game up at 16-16. The teams would stay tied all the way up to 25-25. Then, a kill from Narodowg and an attack error by the Colonels gave the Bucs the 27-25 set win and the 3-1 match win, the Buccaneers first victory of the season and the first collegiate head coaching victory for first-year head coach Cary Clark.
