How It Happened

Salem State went wire-to-wire in the first set. They took a 2-0 lead off the bat and though the Buccaneers scored points intermittently, the Vikings opened their lead to 8-2. Later in the game, Salem opened the lead to seven, 13-6, which was followed by a Buccaneers run that got them back within three, 15-12. Salem then went on to score 10 of the next 12 points to take set one, 25-14, and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two went a bit differently for both teams and though Salem started with a 2-0 lead again, Maritime took an early lead at 5-3. The Vikings scored five consecutive points to retake the lead 8-5. Salem extended their lead to five points, 15-10, which the Buccaneers erased and tied the game up at 18-18 with an 8-3 run. Maritime then took a late lead, 20-18 and maintained a lead until Salem clawed back and tied it at 21-21. The Bucs went back up 23-21 but the Vikings scored the next four points in a row to win the set, 25-23, and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Salem broke out to a five points lead, 10-5. Maritime scored six of the next seven points to tie the game up at 11-11. The teams traded points to 13-13 and then the Bucs took the lead, and though the teams tied again at 17-17, Maritime never looked back and scored the next seven points with Stark on the serve to win the game, 25-17, and bring the match to a 2-1 score.

Maritime led much of the fourth set, 6-3, then 16-13. Down three, Salem scored five points straight to take an 18-16 lead. Maritime scored three more times compared to the Vikings seven points and Salem won the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.
