Bucs Split Road Tri-Match

LEXINGTON, Mass -- The Buccaneers volleyball team played in a road tri-match Sunday afternoon, hosted by Lesley. In their first match, the Bucs lost to the Maine-Presque Isle Owls in the teams first and only meeting of the season by a 3-1 final. Against the Lynx, who they have beaten twice this season, the Bucs made it three with a straight-set 3-0 victory. 

 

Match One

The Basics

Final: Owls 3, Buccaneers 1 (25-16, 17-25, 25-16, 25-20)

Inside the Numbers

Maritime

  • Junior Captain Marlo Stark and freshman Gemma Geisler each had a team-leading nine kills for the Bucs. Sophomore Captain Shayla Narodowg added eight kills.
  • Narodowg led the Buccaneers in assists with 23.
  • Chloe Johnson led the team in aces with four in the match. Freshman Ashleigh Catlett had three aces to her credit.
  • Defensively, Audrey Manning led the team with 17 digs. Stark had 12 and Narodowg racked up 12.
  • At the Net, Johnson had the lone solo block of the match. Izabella Mackintosh and Johnson each had two block assists. Stark and Sydney McCarthy both had a block assist. 
  • In total, the Bucs recorded 37 kills, a .022 hitting percentage, 34 assists, 11 aces, 65 digs, and four total blocks.

Maine-Presque-Isle

  • Alondra Lopez-Aquino led all players offensively with 16 kills. Alexis Engel had 13 kills in the win. 
  • Amalia Erives led all players in assists with 25 in the match.
  • Lopez-Aquino had the most aces for the Owls with three.
  • Five different players recorded double-digit digs for UMPI.
  • Myah Bragdon had two blocks at the net. 
  • In total, the Owls had 37 kills, a .143 hitting percentage, 34 assists, 12 aces, 60 digs and three total blocks.

How It Happened

UMPI took an early lead over the Bucs in set one jumping out to a 5-0 advantage. Maritime chipped in to the early lead before the Owls ran off to a nine-point lead which they did not relinquish the remainder of the game. The Buccaneers got to 16 points but the Owls reached 25 to take the first set, 25-16.

In set two, the Owls took an early lead and held it late into the game. Late in the set, Maritime tied the game at 13-13 and then scored four times to take a 17-13 advantage. The Buccaneer held on to their lead and took it to the end of the set. Up 22-17, the Bucs scored the final three points they needed to take the game, 25-17, and tie the match at 1-1.

The third set began with the teams trading points and were tied at 10-10. From that point, the Owls took the lead and with the score 15-13, UMPI outscored the Buccaneers 10-3 to take the game, 25-16, and take the lead in the match once again, 2-1.

In the fourth set, UMPI took a big early lead as they did in the first game, leading 7-1 early. The Bucs stormed back to take a 10-9 lead and the teams traded points until the Owls retook the lead, 13-12. Maine then went on a run and took a seven-point lead, 24-17, late on. Needing one point to settle the match, the Owls watched the Bucs score three in a row. Then, on a service error by the Bucs, UMPI took the game, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.

Final: Buccaneers 3, Lynx 0 (25-11, 25-4, 25-11)

Records: Maritime (4-14)

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Gemma Geisler led all players in the match with 10 kills. Marlo Stark recorded seven. 
  • Shayla Narodowg led all players in the match with 20 assists and with six aces. 
  • Audrey Manning led the Buccaneers defensively with nine digs. 
  • Narodowg and Chloe Johnson each had a solo block. Johnson also had two block assists. Geisler, Stark, Narodowg, and Sydney McCarthy each had one block assist.
  • In total, the Bucs had 31 kills, a .391 hitting percentage, 24 assists, 19 aces, 27 digs, and four total blocks.

Lesley

  • Rayann Fatahi led the Lynx with four kills. 
  • Sinead Thomas had two assists to lead the team and led in aces with four.
  • Fatahi led the team defensively with nine digs. 
  • Emma Welch had the lone block in the loss.

How It Happened

Lesley put up a fight at the start of the first set, keeping up with the Bucs until Maritime ran away with the game. They went up 21-6 on a 12-point run before Lesley scored again. The Lynx scored four in a row to make the score 21-10, then, the Bucs scored four of the next five to win the first game 25-11.

Maritime scored the first five points of the set and though the Lynx scored three points before the Buccaneers hit 10 points, Maritime then scored the next 15 points to take a 24-3 lead. Lesley scored one more point then the Bucs finished off the game winning 25-4 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Lynx took a 2-0 lead, then Maritime went on a 12-point run to go up 12-2. The Lynx sprinkled in some points but the Buccaneers cruised to a 25-11 win in the third set and took the match, 3-0.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are at Salem State on Tuesday, October 17th at 6pm for a conference match with the Vikings.
