It was a Season to Remember for Bucs Track & Field

The 2022 season was one to remember for the Buccaneer track & field squad. The year was full of firsts, broken records, more broken records, and so much more.

Most notably, for the first time in the 16-year history of the program, Coach Lohse and her staff fielded a complete women's team of 15 student-athletes. By the NCAA's standards, a track and field team must have 12 participants to be considered NCAA compliant.

That women's team fielded the first 4x800 meter relay team that not only set a new program record after their first ever relay, but then broke that record in the same season. The team of Senior captain Lily HakkarainenAlyssa GriecoEvie Gosselin, and Gabby Giammasi set the new program standard in the event with a time of 11:26.26.

The women's side didn't stop there with breaking, and rebreaking records. Freshman Ashley Brennan burst on to the scene for the Bucs in her first campaign breaking two program records. She set the 100 meter hurdles record with a time of 16.62 seconds and the high jump records at 1.37 meters.

Junior Alyssa Grieco continued her climb up the ranks amongst the top Buccaneers after a successful short 2021 season. In 2022 she claimed not only the 4x800 meter relay record but also the 400 meter intermediate hurdles record with a time of 1:09.65, but also the 800 meter run record with a time of 2:31.79. The 800 meter record changed hands three times during the season with Grieco breaking the record initially during a Friday meet at Regis College. The following day at Fitchburg State, Lily Hakkarainen broke Grieco's record that stood for less than 24 hours with a time of 2:37.97. Two weeks later, Grieco reclaimed the 800 meter run record at Eastern Connecticut with the 2:31.79 time.

Hakkarainen did claim a record to keep for herself through the 2022 season in the 1500 meter run. At MIT on April 23rd, the team's final regular season meet of the season, Lily finished the event in 5:25.12 to sit atop the record books.

Senior captain Cam Boyce left her mark on the program she has been a part of for four years setting the 3000 meter steeplechase record, a record she took from herself with a time of 21:51.07.

On the men's side, senior captain Alec Goldenberg set a new men's 800 meter run record with a time of 1:59.76.

In what was a strong year for throwers, Joshua Rousseau claimed the new program record in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.27 meters.

Finally, the 4x100 meter relay team made up of Ja'iel JohnsonAnthony ChildsDemetri Boozer, and Steven Westgate found their way into the NEICAAA Championships at Bryant University on May 14th. The team finished with a time of 43.69 seconds, a new program record set by four student-athletes who worked so hard to get to the meet.

Overall, the teams had a very successful season with multiple top five meet finishes including dual fourth place finishes for the men and women at Eastern Connecticut, a four place finish for the men at the MASCAC Championships and for the men a season-best second place finish at Regis College.
