Murphy Makes Double-Digit Saves in 2-0 loss to Salem State

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers took on Salem State in their second MASCAC game of the season at home on Friday evening. Though the Bucs had their share of chances on goal and keeper John Murphy (Braintree, MA) made ten saves in the game, the Bucs fell to 1-1 in conference wit ha 2-0 loss to the Vikings.

The Basics

Final: Salem 2, Maritime 0

Records: Salem 5-4 (2-0 MASCAC)

             Maritime 1-7 (1-1 MASCAC)

For The Bucs

  • Maritime took six shots in the game with two on target from Nicolas Vanti (East Longmeadow, MA) and McNeill Somers (Boston, MA)
  • Goalkeeper John Murphy (Braintree, MA) faces 12 shots, made 10 saves and allowed the two Vikings goals

For The Vikings

  • Patrick Filetti scored the first goal of the game for the guests on a rebound from a free kick save by Murphy in the 42nd minute. Kendy Price scored the second Salem goal in the 85th minute.
  • Lucas Amaral was credited with an assist on the Price goal on a deep pass from the midfield.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Hauntsman made two saves on two shots faced.

How It Happened

In the first half, the game went back and forth wit heach team getting and taking their chances. The Vikings outshot the Bucs 12-4 in the first half with Murphy being called on to make six saves. Early on, neither team made any of their offensive chances count. Then, in the 42nd minute, Salem earned a freekick from roughly 30 yards away. The ball was put on goal well and was saved by Murphy. Unable to hold on to the shot, the ball fell to the foot of Filetti and he put it in the back of the net for the first goal and the game winner for the Vikes. Coming in the 42nd minute, the game went to the half 1-0.

In the second half, with the game getting physical and both teams fighting, one to preserve their lead, the other to get back in the game, the teams once again took their chances as they came. Unfortunately for Maritime, they were outshot once again, 9-2. In the 85th minute, Amaral put a ball over the top of the Buccaneer defense that fell to the foot of the speedy Prince who had been knocking on the Bucs door all day. Murphy, who played an outstanding game, came rushing out of the six yard box to make a play on the breaking Prince. The ball popped away from the grasp of Murphy and Prince put the ball in the net to make it 2-0 Salem. Maritime was unable to get on the score sheet and the Vikings held on to the top spot in the MASCAC with a 2-0 win over the Bucs.

 

What's Next 

Maritime is off until Friday, October 1st when they travel to MCLA for a conference matchup. Kick off is at 6pm.
