How It Happened

Much of the play in the first 10 minutes of action was in the middle of the field. Both teams took multiple shots on goal from outside the 18 yard box, each with one shot on target. In the 11th minute off a SUNY corner, the Buccaneer defense attempted to clear the ball out of the box, the ball fell to the foot of Schmidt who scored on a half volley shot that found the top right hand corner of the net to give SUNY a 1-0 advantage 11 minutes in. The Privateer momentum continued from there as they took a handful of shots over the next few minutes. A handful of fresh legs for the Bucs off the bench turned the tides initially, until the 30th minute. The play that set up the Cebollero goal was a ball sent through by Burdkhardt, who was credited with the assist on the goal, that bounced off the turf and on to the head of Cebollero who headed it past Hardy for the second Privateer goal of the half. The Buccaneers had their chances in the final 15 minutes of the first half as they earned themselves four corners and took a handful of shots. Unable to breakthrough, the clock struck zero in the first half with SUNY leading, 2-0, at the break.

In the second half, the Buccaneers outshot the Privateers 12-7, trying to break through and erase the clean sheet. Seven of the 12 Maritime shots were on target keeping Nichols busy in goal as he tried to maintain the shutout. It seemed as though the Bucs were going to be able to get the ball past the SUNY keeper but were ultimately unable to do so. The Privateers were also unable to get the ball past Murphy on the other end as he made three second half saves. With neither team able to find the back of the net in the second 45, the Privateers left Buzzards Bay with a 2-0 win over the Bucs.
