Men’s Soccer Can’t hold off Pride in Defensive Battle

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Coming off a loss to open the season, the Bucs played host to Regis College in non-conference action on Saturday evening on Taylor's Point. With a total of five shots on goal between the two teams it was safe to say this one was a defensive battle. Frustrations grew on both sides in the game as neither team could break through. Then, in the 83rd minute, Regis netted a goal to take a late lead and eventually the game, 1-0.

The Basics

Final Score: Regis 1, Maritime 0

Records: Regis 1-0

               Maritime 0-2

For The Bucs

  • Freshman Ryan Soughou (Bel Air, Md) got off two shots in the game to lead the Bucs. Dalton Desrocher (Hanson, Ma) and Benjamin Cook (Ft. Myers, Fl) each had a shot on target in the game. Nicholas Vanti (East Longmeadow, Ma) added an off target shot to round out the offense for the Bucs.
  • Goalkeeper John Murphy (Braintree, Ma) saw three shots from the Pride, making two outstanding saves and allowing the one goal.
  • Maritime picked up three bookings in the game.

For The Pride

  • The eventual goal scorer, Jacob Freitas, led the guests with two shots, both on target and the 83rd minute strike.
  • Santiago Pedraza Novak got off two shots as well, one of which was on target, with four other Regis players getting off a shot, all off target.
  • Aidan Falvey was credited with the assist on the Freitas goal.
  • Goalkeeper Freddie Beckmann saw and saved two shots in the win.
  • Regis picked up two bookings in the match.

How It Happened

The first half was pretty standard as both teams attempted to find a way through each other's defense with little to no avail. Regis held the advantage in shots in the first half, getting off four shots to the Buccaneers one, though only the Maritime shot was on target. Each team had a corner kick in the first half of play with nothing coming of those either. After 45 minutes of play, the teams were knotted at 0-0.

The second half saw a lot more of what the first half provided, defense. The teams were physical, four cards were issues in the second half, and clearly frustrated their offensive opportunities were coming up short. Both teams recorded four shots in the second half with only one of them finding its way in to the net. In the 83rd minute of play Freitas, from Falvey, found the bottom left corner of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead with under 10 minutes to play. The Buccaneers attacked often late in the game but the Pride defense held on for the win.

With the win the Pride go to 1-0 on the season. With the loss, the Bucs fall to 0-2.
