BOSTON, Mass.. --  Senior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) netted five goals and an assist for six points as Wentworth snapped a late 9-9 third quarter with four unanswered tallies to notch a 13-9 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday evening at Sweeney Field.

 

The host Leopards (3-1) overcame a 7-6 halftime deficit by scoring three of the first four goals after intermission to take a 9-8 lead on senior Michael Cushera’s (Waltham, Mass.) marker with 5:55 remaining in the third quarter, but the visiting Buccaneers (4-2) evened matters just 1:37 later on junior Sean Staples’ (Norwell, Mass.) goal.  Junior Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) gave Wentworth the lead for good with 2:37 to play in the stanza, and the hosts added three more scores in the final frame, including two off the stick of Ryan Coakley, to account for the final margin.

 

Four different goal scorers staked Massachusetts Maritime to an early 4-1 lead over the opening 12:31 of action, and after the Leopards closed back to within one early in the second quarter, the Buccaneers used three unanswered tallies, including two from junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.), to take a 7-3 cushion with 9:12 to play in the half.  Wentworth closed the second quarter as it would in the fourth frame with three unanswered scores, including a man-up marker from Ryan Coakley, to close to within one and set the stage for its late heroics.

 

Paradis added a hat trick and five assists to finish with a game-high eight points in the triumph for the Leopards, who also received a pair of goals and an assist from Cushera.  Junior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) added two tallies in the win for Wentworth, which also received a helper off the stick of sophomore Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.).  Kurylak netted a hat trick in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of goals and an assist from Staples as well as a marker and helper from sophomore Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.).  Junior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.), along with sophomores Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) and Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) also tallied for the Buccaneers, who received single assists from sophomores Kevin Collins (Hampden, Mass.) and Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.).

 

Freshman Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with a 12-save effort, while junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made a career-high 16 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Leopards outshot the Buccaneers by a 53-36 margin overall (28-21 on goal) for the contest.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Paxton, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Anna Maria in a non-league outing that begins at 1:00 p.m., while Wentworth hosts Gordon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
