Landy, Steinweg Net Hat Tricks As Men's Lacrosse Opens NEWMAC Play With 20-7 Victory Over Emerson

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) netted a hat trick and an assist for four points to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 20-7 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Emerson Sunday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

 

The host Buccaneers (6-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 5:36 into the contest en route to a 6-2 edge after the opening quarter of action, and Massachusetts Maritime tallied the first five goals, including a pair by Landy, in the first five-plus minutes of the second stanza en route to a 12-4 advantage at the break.  The hosts used seven unanswered tallies over a 19-plus minute stretch in the second half, including a pair off the stick of freshman Robert Steinweg (Arnold, Md.), to ice their triumph and record their highest scoring output in nearly three years.

 

Steinweg joined Landy with a hat trick in the win for the Buccaneers, while junior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Conor Greaney (Milton, Mass.) each added a pair of goals and an assist for three points for the hosts, who also received a marker and two helpers each from senior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.), junior Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Collins (Hampden, Mass.).  Junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) tallied twice for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a goal and an assist from sophomore Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) as well as markers off the sticks of sophomores Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.), Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) and Patrick Kearney (Scituate, Mass.) along with freshman Robert Maccarthy (Winchester, Mass.).

 

Freshman Andrew Romano (Sarasota, Fla.) scored a game-high five goals in the setback for the visiting Lions (3-5, 0-1 NEWMAC), who also received a marker and helper from junior Nick Kitsos (Summit, N.J.) and a tally off the stick of junior Conor Judge (Smithfield, R.I.).  Junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) earned his fifth win of the season in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a five-save effort in nearly 37 minutes of action, while sophomore Jacob Brennan (North Reading, Mass.) and freshman Conor Sherman (Ocean Springs, Miss.) combined for six stops over the final 23 minutes of play for the Buccaneers.  Sophomore Jordan Maue (Andover, Mass.) made 15 saves in the setback for Emerson, as the Buccaneers outshot the Lions by a 54-22 margin overall (35-18 on goal) and forced 29 turnovers while holding an 18-11 edge in the face-off circle for the contest.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers head to Springfield, Mass. to take on Springfield in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m., while Emerson travels to Leicester, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Becker in a non-league outing at 4:00 p.m.
