FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 6, SAINT JOSEPH’S (MAINE) 2

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) netted a goal and an assist to back an eight-save effort in goal from junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) in leading Massachusetts Maritime to a 6-2 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in the season-opener for both teams played Tuesday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Freudenberg staked the host Buccaneers (1-0) to the early lead by converting a feed from sophomore Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) with 2:21 remaining in the opening quarter, and freshman Kyle Richardson (West Newbury, Mass.) extended that margin to 2-0 at the break with a man-down marker that came with 9:49 remaining in the half.  Senior Brad Loomis (Saunderstown, R.I.) sliced the visiting Monks’ (0-1) deficit in half after converting a pass from fellow senior Dalton Eldridge (South Gardiner, Maine) with 2:26 to play in the third stanza, but Massachusetts Maritime broke things open with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, including an even strength tally by sophomore Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) and a man-up goal off the stick of junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) in the opening 4:41 of the frame, to spark the hosts’ run.

Junior Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) added scores in the final 5:10 of action for the Buccaneers, who also received assists off the sticks of sophomore Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and freshman John Mahoney (Hanover, Mass.).  Freshman Tom Lisiecki (South Boston, Mass.) netted Saint Joseph’s other goal of the contest with 1:21 remaining, as Eldridge provided the assists on both of the Monks’ markers.

Klose picked up his first career victory in his first collegiate start in net for Massachusetts Maritime, as he made five saves in the second half alone.  Senior Ethan Rettew (Ephrata, Pa.) made 19 saves, including eight in the third quarter alone, in the setback for Saint Joseph’s, as the Buccaneers outshot the Monks by a 35-26 margin overall (25-10 on goal) for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Albertus Magnus in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Saint Joseph’s heads to Biddeford, Maine on Thursday afternoon to take on the University of New England in a non-league match that begins at 4:00 p.m.
