THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Senior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) each netted hat tricks to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 16-8 college men’s lacrosse victory over Maine Maritime in first round action of the Second Annual Maritime Cup played Saturday afternoon at SUNY-Maritime’s Reinhart Field.

 

The Buccaneers, who are off to their second straight 3-0 start, overcame a pair of one-goal first quarter deficits to take the lead for good on goals by Freudenberg and junior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) in the final 1:03 of the opening stanza, and a pair of second quarter tallies off the stick of sophomore Conor Greaney (Milton, Mass.) helped Massachusetts Maritime increase its advantage to 6-2 at the break.  Freudenberg sparked a four-goal run in the opening 8:48 after intermission by completing his hat trick as the Buccaneers extended their lead to 10-2, and after the Mariners (0-4) crept back to within six early in the final frame on freshman Dean Samuelson’s (Ellsworth, Maine) man-up marker, Bartley began another four-goal run with a pair of goals that gave Massachusetts Maritime its largest advantage of the day (15-5) with 9:25 remaining and sealed the Buccaneers’ fourth straight Admiral’s Cup series triumph over their rivals.

 

Junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) finished with a pair of goals and two assists for four points in the win for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of tallies and a helper from sophomore Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) as well as a pair of markers off the stick of McLean.  Sophomore Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) chipped in with a goal and two assists for the Buccaneers, who also received a tally from junior Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) and a helper from sophomore Kevin Collins (Hampden, Mass.).  Senior Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) netted a hat trick and an assist to finish with four points in the setback for Maine Maritime, which also received a hat trick from Samuelson on the afternoon.  Senior Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) and sophomore Peter Moore (Scarborough, Maine) chipped in with markers for the Mariners, who also received an assist off the stick of senior A.J. Larrabee (Farmington, Maine).

 

Junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) picked up his third win of the week in goal with a 10-save effort for Massachusetts Maritime, as sophomore Jacob Brennan (North Reading, Mass.) played the final two-plus minutes in net without a save.  Junior James Wilgus (Phippsburg, Maine) made 21 stops in the setback for Maine Maritime, as the Buccaneers outshot the Mariners by a 60-34 margin overall (37-16 on goal) while forcing 31 turnovers for the contest.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will take on host SUNY-Maritime for the championship of the Second Annual Maritime Cup tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field, as the Privateers topped Maine Maritime by a 15-8 final in their opening round match on Friday evening.  Maine Maritime will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Mariners host Lyndon State in their North Atlantic Conference opener at Ritchie Field in Castine, Maine beginning at 3:30 p.m.
