BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass.) and junior Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn.) each netted hat tricks to lead Wheaton to an 11-5 Pilgrim Lacrosse League victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Lyons (10-4, 5-1 Pilgrim) overcame an early 1-0 deficit with three goals in less than three minutes, including two by Harrington and senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y.) in a four second span, to take a 3-1 lead with 6:25 to play in the opening quarter, but the host Buccaneers (7-9, 1-5 Pilgrim) ran off three unanswered goals in a five minute span, including a man-up marker by freshman Dylan Freudenberg’s (Islip, N.Y.) to tie the score and an even-strength tally by junior Jake Simpson (Scituate, Mass.) with 10:47 to play in the half, to take a 4-3 advantage.  Wheaton used a man-up marker from freshman Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.) to even matters just over four minutes later, and Doherty provided a pair of tallies, including a man-down goal, in the final 4:19 of action that gave the Lyons’ a 6-4 edge at the break.  Freshman Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) sliced Massachusetts Maritime’s deficit back to one just 4:40 after intermission, but that would prove to be the final Buccaneer goal of the evening, as a pair of markers by Harrington, coupled with tallies by Smith, Doherty and senior David Schroeder (Nashua, N.H.) over the final 22:40 of action, accounted for the final score.

Hillman added two assists to go with his goal in the victory for Wheaton, while Smith also chipped in with an assist to finish with three points for the Lyons.  Schroeder and senior Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) collected a marker and helper each for the winners, who also received an assist off the stick of sophomore Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine).  Senior Will Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) finished with a goal and an assist in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker off the stick of senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.).

Sophomore Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) picked up the win in goal for Wheaton with a 10-save effort, while sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made 14 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 40-29 margin while holding a 14-6 edge in face-offs for the evening.

Tonight’s match marked the season finale for Massachusetts Maritime, which posted its highest victory total in four years under the guidance of second year Head Coach Rory Deegan.  Wheaton is seeded second in the Pilgrim League championships and will host third-seeded Babson in semi-final round play Wednesday afternoon in Norton, Mass.
