LEICESTER, Mass. --  Freshmen Jay Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) each scored a pair of fourth quarter goals as Massachusetts Maritime rallied from a 6-3 deficit to notch a 9-7 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Becker Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (3-3) ran off five unanswered markers after the host Hawks (0-6) had taken their three goal lead just 11 seconds into the final stanza on freshman Michael Whalen’s (Warwick, R.I.) tally, as goals by Prowse and freshman Adam Palilonis (Hightstown, N.J.) enabled Massachusetts Maritime to pull within one before senior Jake Bickley’s (Wilbraham, Mass.) man-up goal with 7:06 to play evened matters at 6-6.  Sousa gave the visitors the lead for good with 2:06 to play in the contest, and Prowse extended the Buccaneer advantage to 8-6 with 1:35 remaining with his second of the quarter.  Junior Jeff Petersen’s (Syracuse, N.Y.) just 31 seconds later enabled Becker to creep back to within one at 8-7, but Sousa’s second score of the quarter on a feed from senior Peter Menard (Somerset, Mass.) with 25 seconds to play sealed Massachusetts Maritime’s triumph.

Junior John Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) also tallied twice in the win for the Buccaneers, who received a goal and an assist from Bickey, Palilonis and freshman Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) on the afternoon.  Freshman Alex Hurd (Chelmsford, Mass.) collected a pair of goals in the setback for Becker, which also received a marker and two assists from Petersen.  Junior Joe Ignagni (Kingston, Mass.), sophomore John DeAngelis (Swampscott, Mass.) and freshman James Conley (Barnstable, Mass.) netted single goals for the Hawks, who also received an assist off the stick of sophomore Matt Matson (Worcester, Mass.).

Freshman Eric Kuehn (Norwell, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate win in goal with five second half saves for Massachusetts Maritime, which received seven first half stops from sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.).  Senior Josh Smith (Lewes, Del.) made 19 saves in the setback for Becker, as the Buccaneers outshot the Hawks by a 51-30 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Portland, Maine on Sunday afternoon to take on Maine Maritime in the Admiral’s Cup match at Fitzpatrick Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Becker hosts Daniel Webster in a New England Collegiate Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field that begins at Noon.
