WORCESTER, Mass. --  Senior Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) netted a hat trick, including two markers as part of a five-goal fourth quarter outburst, to lead Clark to an 8-2 Pilgrim Lacrosse League victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.

The host Cougars (5-4, 1-1 Pilgrim) overcame a career-best 24-save performance by sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) in goal for the visiting Buccaneers (5-5, 0-2 Pilgrim), as Clark built a 2-1 lead at the break and extended that margin to 3-1 after three quarters of play before tallying five times in a 7:48 span in the final stanza to take control of the contest.  Johnson began the run with 10:51 remaining in the match and completed his hat trick with 5:58 to play, as junior Nick Figliola (Weston, Conn.), sophomore Jeffrey Wasson (Buckhorn, Ont.) and freshman Keegan Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) also tallied in the final frame for the hosts.

Johnson’s man-up marker just 32 seconds into the contest gave the Cougars a 1-0 first quarter lead, and Wasson extended that margin to 2-0 with 11:41 to play in the half.  Freshman Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) sliced Massachusetts Maritime’s deficit in half with 1:53 to play before the break, and senior Phil Winslow’s (Providence, R.I.) goal with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter gave Clark a 3-1 cushion, setting up the decisive fourth quarter run that sealed its triumph.

Wasson finished with a pair of goals and an assist in the win for the Cougars, who also received a marker and helper each from Winslow and Figliola as well as a single assist off the stick of freshman Nate Donoso-Reddick (El Cerrito, Calif.).  Senior Kyle Scannell (Tierra Verde, Fla.) joined Freudenberg with goal in the setback for the Buccaneers, who also received an assist from freshman Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.).

Senior Andrew DiVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) picked up the victory in goal for Clark with an eight-save effort, while Painten shattered his career-high in saves for Massachusetts Maritime, making 13 first half stops and adding 11 more after intermission as the Cougars outshot the Buccaneers by a 48-19 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Clark heads to Brunswick, Maine on Wednesday evening to take on Bowdoin in a non-league match that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
