BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshmen Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) and Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) each netted hat tricks and two assists for five points to lead Massachusetts Maritime to an 8-6 victory over SUNY-Maritime in the Fourth Annual Maritime Cup contest played Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The host Buccaneers (2-2) captured their first-ever Maritime Cup trophy in the four-match series with the visiting Privateers (1-6), as Prowse netted a pair of goals in the first 8:32 of action in the second quarter to snap a 2-2 tie and give Massachusetts Maritime a 4-2 advantage with 6:28 remaining in the half.  Senior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y.) closed SUNY-Maritime’s deficit to 4-3 at the break with a tally that came with 2:48 to go in the second stanza, and he evened matters for the visitors midway through the third quarter on a feed from sophomore Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y.).  Freudenberg converted a Prowse feed just 1:04 later to give the Buccaneers a 6-5 edge, but junior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) responded for the Privateers just 26 seconds later to forge the third and final tie of the contest.

Freudenberg then gave Massachusetts Maritime the lead for good with a man-down goal with just over three minutes remaining in the third stanza, and junior John Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) extended the hosts’ lead to 7-5 with an unassisted marker 1:24 later.  Freshman Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y.) accounted for SUNY-Maritime’s final marker 4:52 into the final frame to cut the visitors’ deficit back to one, but Hojnoski sealed the Buccaneers’ triumph with his second unassisted tally of the day with 1:57 remaining to account for the final score.

Freshman Mike Raskin (Westwood, Mass.) added an assist in the victory for Massachusetts Maritime, while Messina joined Driscoll with two goals each in the setback for SUNY-Maritime, which also received a marker off the stick of sophomore Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y.) as well as single helpers from junior Cory Gallagher (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C.).

Sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a 14-save effort, while junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y.) made four stops in net for SUNY-Maritime as the Privateers outshot the Buccaneers by a 33-22 margin while holding a 13-5 edge in face-offs for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Plymouth State in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m., while SUNY-Maritime hosts Wesleyan in a non-league match on Wednesday evening in Throggs Neck, N.Y. beginning at 7:00 p.m.
