FINAL:              WPI 4, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2

NORTHBORO, Mass. --  Senior John Mulready’s (Rockland, Mass.) two-run single in the bottom of the seventh snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted WPI to a 4-2 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

The host Engineers (7-4) overcame a 1-0 first inning deficit to even matters in the bottom of the second on freshman Steven Gallagher’s (Coventry, R.I.) first collegiate homer, and the score remained tied until the top of the seventh when junior Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch to give the visiting Buccaneers (2-4) a 2-1 advantage.  Junior Nick Comei (Haverhill, Mass.) evened matters once again for WPI with a two-out RBI single that set the stage for Mulready, as he knocked in Comei and senior Alex Venditti (Newton, Mass.) with the go-ahead runs that accounted for the final margin.

Mulerady, Gallagher and senior DJ Ouellette (Watertown, Conn.) each had two hits as part of an eight-hit attack in the triumph for WPI, as junior Mike Vaitkunas (Auburn, Mass.) earned his second victory in three decisions on the spring with four innings of one-hit relief of fellow junior CJ Doskocil (Sterling, Mass.), who fanned three over the first five frames.  Senior Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.), sophomore Casey Furnas (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass.) accounted for three hits on the afternoon for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a first inning sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Logan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass.) that accounted for the game’s first run.  Senior Alex Rozak (Plymouth, Mass.) suffered the tough-luck setback for the Buccaneers in striking out five over 6 2/3 innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the young season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wentworth in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while WPI entertains Gordon in a non-league contest on Thursday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
