FINAL:              TUFTS 21, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 3

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Harry Brown (Beverly, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in three runs, while junior Oscar Kutch (Houston, Tex.) and sophomore Mike McLaughlin (Haddonfield, N.J.) drove in four runs each to lead Tufts to a 21-3 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

McLaughlin’s three-run homer in the top of the first paved the way for the visiting Jumbos (7-3), who scored at least one run in each of the first eight innings of action.  Kutch added three hits as part of a 19-hit attack for Tufts, which received at least one hit from eight of its nine starting position players on the day.  McLaughlin, along with seniors Cody McCallum (Rutherford, N.J.) and Matt Moser (Great Falls, Va.), chipped in with a pair of hits each for the Jumbos, who also received a pair of RBI from sophomore Tommy O’Hara (Glenview, Ill.).  The visitors broke things open with a four-run fourth inning rally highlighted by Kutch’s two run single, as Tufts plated 11 runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames combined to account for its final total.

Sophomore Cobie Gerbis (Holmes Beach, Fla.) collected three hits and drove in a run in the setback for the host Buccaneers (6-8), who also received a pair of hits (including a solo homer) from sophomore Logan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass.).  Junior Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.) had two hits and an RBI as well for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two hits from sophomore Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) as a part of a 10-hit attack.

Junior Speros Varinos (Middleton, Mass.), the second of seven Tufts pitchers, picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while sophomore Trevor Brown (Rehoboth, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, as he fanned a pair in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Newbury in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Tufts heads to Lewiston, Maine on Saturday afternoon to begin a three-game New England Small College Athletic Conference series with Bates that begins at 3:00 p.m.
