Sullo, Avery Named As MASCAC Baseball Player, Pitcher Of The Week As Buccaneers Claim Consecutive Honors

Massachusetts Maritime sophomore catcher Logan Sullo was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks on Monday afternoon, while junior teammate Daniel Avery was tabbed as the MASCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for their respective performances in three Buccaneer outings last week.

Sullo, a native of Acushnet, Mass. and a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, batted .700 (7-10) with a double, run scored and RBI for Head Coach Mike Kelley’s squad, including five hits and a run in a doubleheader split at co-league leading Salem State last Saturday afternoon.  Sullo, the reigning MASCAC Player of the Year and last season’s conference Rookie of the Year, added two hits (including a double) in a setback to Suffolk last Thursday afternoon, and for the week Logan posted a .750 on-base percentage and an .800 slugging percentage.  Sullo leads the MASCAC with a .427 batting average, .707 slugging percentage and .520 on-base percentage, as 13 of his 32 hits have gone for extra bases.

Avery, a native of Milford, Mass. and a graduate of Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout and struck out six in a 1-0 nightcap triumph at Salem State last Saturday afternoon that handed the host Vikings’ their first league setback of the spring.  In 13 conference innings pitched this season, Avery has allowed one earned run while striking out 12 batters, including six in a 2-1 win at Fitchburg State on April 9th.  Daniel has a 3-1 overall record to go with a 3.38 earned run average in eight appearances (five starts) this spring, as he has struck out 36 in 29 1/3 innings of work while holding opponents to a .234 batting average.

The Buccaneers have had the last three MASCAC Players of the Week, as sophomore outfielder Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass./Pope John Paul II) copped last week’s accolade.  Avery is the second straight Massachusetts Maritime hurler to take league Pitcher of the Week honors, as senior teammate Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) claimed the award last Monday en route to earning a spot on the D3Baseball.com Division III National Team of the Week.

Massachusetts Maritime, which is 15-10 overall and tied atop the MASCAC standings with Salem State at 7-1 after Monday’s home conference sweep of MCLA, hosts Fisher in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
