Kennedys, Sances Sweep MASCAC Baseball Weekly Honors

Massachusetts Maritime swept the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball weekly honors that were announced on Monday afternoon, as the conference co-leading Buccaneers garnered the league’s Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Week accolades.

Sophomore outfielder Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass./Pope John Paul II) was tabbed as the MASCAC Player of the Week after batting .467 (7-15) with two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI in a 5-0 week for Head Coach Mike Kelley’s squad.  Kennedy rapped out three hits, scored three times and drove in a pair of runs in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Worcester State at Commodore Hendy Field while plating the deciding tally with a sacrifice fly in Saturday’s 2-1 nightcap triumph at Fitchburg State.  Connor added three hits and two RBI in a 5-1 win at Coast Guard last Wednesday afternoon, and for the week he posted a .600 slugging percentage and a .421 on-base percentage.

Senior co-captain Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) earned MASCAC Pitcher of the Week honors after posting a win and a pair of saves in three conference outings for Massachusetts Maritime.  Kennedy earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief in Sunday’s 5-4 come-from-behind nightcap triumph over Worcester State, and he saved both ends of Saturday’s sweep at Fitchburg State by retiring all nine batters he faced (three via strikeout).  Kyle tossed six scoreless frames in relief in the five games last week, allowing two hits and fanning eight overall that included a shutout final inning in last Wednesday’s win at Coast Guard.

Freshman outfielder Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) collected MASCAC Rookie of the Week accolades after batting .417 (5-12) with a pair of doubles and three RBI on the week, including four hits, two runs scored and two more driven in during Sunday’s sweep of Worcester State.  Sances, who added a double and an RBI in last Wednesday’s victory at Coast Guard, posted a .583 slugging percentage on the week.

Connor Kennedy becomes the second straight Buccaneer to earn MASCAC Player of the Week honors, as reigning league Player of the Year Logan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass./Bishop Stang) earned the accolade last Monday.  Sances is Massachusetts Maritime’s third Rookie of the Week recipient this spring, joining fellow freshmen Brian Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Travis Zurowski (Brooklyn, Conn./Killingly), who earned their respective awards on March 21st and April 4th.

Massachusetts Maritime, which stands at 12-8 overall on the season, brings a six-game winning streak into this week’s play, as Kelley’s crew returns to action tomorrow afternoon by hosting Suffolk in a non-league outing at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.  The Buccaneers are off to their best start ever in league play (4-0) and are riding a school-record 10-game MASCAC winning streak that dates back to April 18, 2015, and that streak will be on the line Saturday when Massachusetts Maritime meets fellow conference co-leader Salem State in a road twinbill that begins at Noon EDT.
