FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 6, BECKER 4

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Logan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass.) rapped out three hits to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 6-4 non-league college baseball victory over Becker Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The host Buccaneers (6-7) grabbed a 3-0 second inning lead on a two-run double off the bat of senior Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.), who then scored on a suicide squeeze by sophomore Nathan Anderson (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and Massachusetts Maritime extended that margin to 5-0 with a pair of runs that came with two outs in the third after Sullo tripled in a run and scored on sophomore Cobie Gerbis’s (Holmes Beach, Fla.) RBI single.  The visiting Hawks (11-8) got on the board in the fifth on sophomore Chris Testa’s (Providence, R.I.) infield single, and Becker closed back to within two at 5-3 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Sully Bortner (Palmyra, Pa.) and an RBI single off the bat off sophomore Josiah Shepherd (Providence, R.I.).  The hosts added an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Billy Keane (Braintree, Mass.) singled, stole second and scored on senior Everett Walsh’s (Marstons Mills, Mass.) single, and the visitors crept back to within a pair once again in the ninth when sophomore Kevin Perez (Jersey City, N.J.) doubled and scored on freshman Tanyon Ventres’s (Holden, Mass.) RBI groundout to account for the final margin.

Downs added a pair of hits as part of a 10-hit attack in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Brian Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.) allowed a pair of earned runs and struck out five in three relief innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.  Freshman Riley Fusaro (Nantucket, Mass.) allowed a hit and fanned one over the final three frames to pick up his second save of the spring for the Buccaneers, as senior Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.) tossed three hitless innings in the start for the hosts.  Freshman Daniel Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four over five innings of work for Becker, as he fell to 0-3 overall with the setback.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Tufts in a non-league outing on Wednesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Becker heads to Providence, R.I. on Wednesday afternoon for a non-league contest with Rhode Island College that begins at 3:30 p.m.
