WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Freshman Mike Molta (Nantucket, Mass.) tossed a complete-game one-hitter and struck out five to lead Westfield State to a 5-0 nightcap victory over Massachusetts Maritime and a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  The host Owls used a four-run rally to snap a sixth inning deadlock en route to a 6-2 triumph in the opener.

Westfield State (15-15, 7-3 MASCAC) jumped out to a 1-0 second inning lead in the lid-lifter on junior Alex Cloutier’s (Westford, Mass.) RBI single, but the visiting Buccaneers (11-15, 3-7 MASCAC) evened matters in the third on a run-scoring infield single off the bat of freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) and took a 2-1 edge in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from junior Hunter Horton (Wareham, Mass.).  The Owls knotted matters at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame on Cloutier’s run-scoring infield single, and the score remained deadlocked until the decisive sixth, as junior Andrew Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) snapped the tie with an RBI double and scored on Cloutier’s third RBI single of the contest.  Freshman Dan Rokitowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) added a pair of insurance tallies with a two-run single that capped the scoring, and junior Bret Siflinger (Framingham, Mass.) took care of the rest on the mound for the hosts, scattering two hits in going the distance while fanning six to improve to 4-2.

Cloutier and junior Kevin Greene (Worcester, Mass.) each rapped out three hits as part of a 10-hit attack in the opener for the Owls, who also received a pair of safeties from Rokitowski.  Senior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings in relief of junior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.), who allowed five hits and two runs over the first four frames.

Westfield State gave Molta all the support he would need in its first at-bat of the nightcap, as a two-run single by senior Josh Blair (Westfield, Mass.) and a two-run triple by Cloutier accounted for the scoring.  Freshman Nick Champeau’s (Southbridge, Mass.) RBI double in the fifth completed the Owls’ scoring, as Molta carried a no-hitter into the sixth before Buccaneer freshman Peter Sheppard (Chatham, Mass.) broke it up with a lead-off single.  Blair collected two of the hosts’ five hits in the nightcap, as Molta improved to 2-3 on the season with the victory, while freshman Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) went the distance on the hill for Massachusetts Maritime, allowing five hits and fanning a pair to fall to 1-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at 2:00 p.m., while Westfield State hosts MCLA in a MASCAC twinbill on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field that also begins at 2:00 p.m.
