SALEM, Mass. --  Sophomores Devin Rudolph (Carver, Mass.) and Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) each had two hits, including a pair of two-run singles in a decisive fifth-inning rally, and drove in three runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 9-7 victory over Salem State in the opening game of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  The host Vikings used a five-hit complete game shutout from sophomore Ed Deren (Westford, Mass.) to gain a split of the twinbill with an 11-0 nightcap triumph.

The visiting Buccaneers (9-12, 2-4 MASCAC) jumped out to a 2-0 second inning lead in the lid-lifter on an RBI single by junior Zach Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) and a run-scoring groundout by freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.), but the host Vikings (24-6, 5-1 MASCAC) took a 4-2 lead in the third on a two-run single by sophomore Nick Conti (Lynn, Mass.), an RBI safety by sophomore Matt Burgess (Kingston, Mass.) and an error.  Massachusetts Maritime evened matters in the fourth on RBI singles by Rudolph and Lee, and that duo keyed the deciding five-run fifth frame for the visitors, who also received a run-scoring double from sophomore Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.).  Salem State answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by junior Bill Cataldo (Reading, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Ethan Trowt (Beverly, Mass.), but that was as close as the hosts would come, as Buccaneer senior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.) stranded three runners over the final two innings and snap the Vikings’ 12-game winning streak that dated back to March 26th.

Senior Billy Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) joined Rudolph and Lee with two hits as part of a 10-hit attack in the opener for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received three stolen bases from sophomore Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.).  Sophomore Chris Gallagher (East Sandwich, Mass.) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief to improve to 3-2 on the spring for the Buccaneers, as Lowe went the final three frames to earn his second save.  Conti and Burgess each had two hits in the opening game setback for Salem State, as senior Mario Padovani (Lynnfield, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Vikings, allowing all five fifth inning runs to fall to 1-1 on the season.

Salem State used a seven-run fourth inning rally to break up a scoreless game in the nightcap, as a two-run single by junior Kevin Salines (Melrose, Mass.), coupled with a pair of RBI singles by Burgess and Trowt to go with a run-scoring double by Conti, highlighted the frame.  The Vikings added two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by junior Steve Buitkus (Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass.), who teamed up with sophomore Felix Zamot (Peabody, Mass.) for run-scoring singles in the sixth to account for the final score.  Salines and Conti each had two hits as part of a 10-hit nightcap attack for the hosts, as Deren fanned seven to improve to 4-2 on the season.  Rosano collected two of Massachusetts Maritime’s five hits in the second contest, as Gallagher suffered the setback in allowing two earned runs over three-plus innings.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Salem State travels to Westfield, Mass. on Monday afternoon to take on Westfield State in a MASCAC twinbill that also begins at Noon.
