BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout and struck out eight to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 5-0 opening game victory over Rivier in a non-league college baseball doubleheader played Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as the host Buccaneers received two hits and three RBI from sophomore Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) to complete the sweep with a 9-3 nightcap triumph.

Lee’s RBI single in the third inning of the opener gave Massachusetts Maritime (4-2) the only run it would need, as the Buccaneers received a two-run triple from junior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) and an RBI fielder’s choice from junior Hunter Horton (Wareham, Mass.) to extend their lead to 4-0 in the fourth.  Freshman Bobby Rosano’s (North Reading, Mass.) steal of home in the fifth capped the scoring for the hosts, and Genereux took care of the rest on the mound, as he allowed just two singles to even his mark at 1-1 on the spring.  Rosano and sophomore Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) each had two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in the opener for the Buccaneers, while juniors Brian Troy (Keene, N.H.) and John DiBenedetto (Tampa, Fla.) collected the lone safeties of the first contest for the visiting Raiders (1-9).  Freshman Briar King (Berlin, N.H.) allowed three earned runs over the first four frames of work for Rivier in the opener to fall to 1-2.

Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to a 3-0 second inning lead in the nightcap on an error, an RBI single by sophomore Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.) and a suicide squeeze by sophomore Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.), but the Raiders closed back to 3-2 in the third on a two-run double off the bat of junior Aramis Velez (Lowell, Mass.).  The Buccaneers got those runs back in the fifth on a two-run inside-the-park home run by Rosano (the first round tripper of his career), and after the Raiders crept back to within a pair at 5-3 in the fifth on DiBenedetto’s sacrifice fly, the hosts iced their triumph and completed the sweep with a four-run sixth inning rally highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Lee and an RBI single off the bat of junior Zach Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.).

Sullivan and Genereux joined Lee with two hits each in the nightcap victory for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) allowed two runs and fanned three over the first four innings of work to pick up his first collegiate win.  Fellow freshman Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) earned his first career save with three innings of work that included a pair of strikeouts for the Buccaneers, while sophomore Kevin Weaver (Hudson, N.H.) accounted for half of Rivier’s six hits in the nightcap with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate.  Freshman Arthur Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) went the distance on the mound in the second game for the Raiders, allowing just four earned runs and striking out three to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Wenham, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Gordon in a non-league outing that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Rivier travels to Bennington, Vt. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Southern Vermont in a non-league clash that also begins at 3:00 p.m.
