NEW LONDON, Conn. --  Freshman Peter Sheppard (Chatham, Mass.) rapped out a career-high four hits and drove in four runs as Massachusetts Maritime rallied from a 6-3 deficit with seven runs over the final three innings of play to notch a 10-7 non-league college baseball victory over Coast Guard Thursday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (11-13) used a five-run seventh inning rally to erase that three-run deficit and take the lead for good at 8-6, as Sheppard’s two-run single capped the scoring in the frame that also featured an RBI single by senior Billy Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) and a run-scoring groundout by sophomore Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) that sandwiched a pair of errors.  Massachusetts Maritime added a tally in the eighth on Lee’s sacrifice fly, and after the host Bears (12-21) closed back to within a pair at 9-7 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by junior Tyler Babkiewich (Golden, Colo.), the visitors closed out the scoring on Sheppard’s RBI double in the top of the ninth.

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat when senior Mike Salerno (Ellicott City, Md.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but the Buccaneers evened matters in the second on Sheppard’s run scoring single.  The Bears took a 3-1 edge in the third on a two-run single by sophomore Dave Wolinski (Henrico, Va.), and after Massachusetts Maritime closed back to within one in the fifth on freshman Bobby Rosano’s (North Reading, Mass.) RBI single, the hosts extended their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning on Wolinski’s two-run double that followed an RBI single off the bat of freshman Mike Shannon (Durham, N.C.).  Sophomore Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) scored on a double play grounder in the top of the sixth for the visitors, setting up their seven run outburst in the late innings.

Rosano and sophomore Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.) each added three hits as part of a 13-hit attack in the win for Massachusetts Maritime, the 535th career triumph for 40th-year Head Coach Bob Corradi and the Buccaneers’ first in New London in four years.  Sophomore Chris Gallagher (East Sandwich, Mass.) earned his fourth victory in seven decisions in relief for the visitors, fanning a pair in three innings of work, while freshman Zac Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) allowed a pair of hits and struck out two over the final three innings to record his fifth save of the spring for Massachusetts Maritime.

Wolinski rapped out two hits and drove in four runs in the setback for Coast Guard, which received three hits off the bat of junior Nolan Gallagher (Milford, Conn.) and two safeties each from Shannon and Babkiewich as part of a 12-hit attack.  Freshman Anthony Martin (Fredericksburg, Va.) suffered his fourth setback in five decisions in relief for the Bears, allowing six unearned runs in two innings of work.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Westfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Coast Guard hosts Framingham State in a non-league outing on Friday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
