EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  Junior Brian Olofson (Highlands, N.J.) rapped out three hits to back seven innings of work on the mound from senior Alex MacKay (Sanford, Maine) as Johnson & Wales notched a 12-3 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon at Pierce Field.

The host Wildcats (15-9) plated all of the runs they would need with a five-run uprising with two outs in the bottom of the second, as senior Joe Coppola (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) collected RBI singles that were followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of junior James Reyes (Providence, R.I.) and a two-run two-bagger by sophomore Alex Pezzuto (Hastings, N.Y.).  The visiting Buccaneers (8-7) got single runs back in the third on sophomore Ben Maher’s (Plymouth, Mass.) RBI infield single and in the fourth on a run-scoring fielder’s choice by freshman Peter Sheppard (Chatham, Mass.), but Johnson & Wales extended its lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Reyes’ RBI single.

Massachusetts Maritime closed back to within three at 6-3 in the fifth on junior Hunter Horton’s (Wareham, Mass.) sacrifice fly, but the Wildcats tacked on a pair of tallies in the sixth on RBI singles off the bats of sophomore Tyler Pacheco (East Hampstead, N.H.) and freshman Rob Bocchetti (East Meadow, N.Y.) and closed out the scoring with four eighth inning runs on run-scoring singles by Olofson and freshman Mike Saia (Bridgeport, Conn.) that sandwiched a two-run safety from sophomore Jack Hocking (Hanover, Mass.).

Reyes and Pezutto each had two hits and a pair of RBI in the triumph for Johnson & Wales, which also received two hits from Newsome, Pacheco and Coppola as part of a 17-hit attack.  MacKay earned his third victory in five decisions on the spring for the Wildcats, allowing a pair of earned runs and fanning four over his seven innings of work.  Sophomore Jonathan Moffitt (Lake Mary, Fla.) and freshman Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) recorded two hits each in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which rapped out eight hits on the afternoon, as freshman T.J. Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) allowed five runs over the first two frames to fall to 1-1 on the season for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Johnson & Wales hosts Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Pierce Field beginning that begins at Noon.
