BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) tossed a complete-game seven-hitter, allowing an earned run and striking out three to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 4-3 non-league college baseball victory over Newbury Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

Mulhern threw 120 pitches (80 for strikes) and overcame a pair of walks with a double play and nine ground ball outs to improve to 2-1 on the season for the host Buccaneers (12-17), who overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 with a decisive two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth.  The visiting Nighthawks (21-17) took advantage of a pair of errors in their first at-bat to grab an early 2-0 advantage on RBI singles off the bats of senior Alex Chetelat (Farmington, Conn.) and sophomore Chris Murphy (Griswold, Conn.), but Massachusetts Maritime sliced its deficit in half in the second when junior Hunter Horton (Wareham, Mass.) collected a one-out single and scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Peter Sheppard (Chatham, Mass.).

Newbury took a 3-1 lead in the third on an error and Chetelat’s single that produced his 100th career RBI, but the Buccaneers again closed back to within one in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of an error and a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Zach Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.).  The hosts took the lead for good in the decisive fifth inning when Sullivan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to even matters and sophomore Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly, and Mulhern faced only two batters over the minimum over the final four frames to earn the triumph, inducing a double-play grounder in the eighth while picking off a runner at second along the way.

Sullivan and sophomore Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) each rapped out two hits in the victory for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received singles off the bats of sophomores Devin Rudolph (Carver, Mass.) and Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.) as part of a seven-hit attack.  Chetelat, Murphy and senior Patrick Curry (Hampstead, N.H.) each collected two hits in the setback for Newbury, which also received a single off the bat of senior Joey Herer (Needham, Mass.).  Senior Jorge Pimentel (Winsted, Conn.) went the distance on the mound in the setback for the Nighthawks, scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts to fall to 2-2 on the spring.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Newbury travels to North Adams, Mass. on Sunday afternoon for a non-league twinbill with MCLA that begins at 1:00 p.m.
