NORTH ADAMS, Mass. --  Freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) rapped out three hits, including an RBI single in the fifth that snapped a 5-5 tie, to lead Massachusetts Maritime to an 8-6 nightcap victory and a split of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with MCLA Sunday afternoon at Joe Zavattaro Field.  The host Trailblazers received a complete-game six-hit effort in the opener from senior Daniel Gaines (Holyoke, Mass.) in notching a 5-3 triumph.

An error and a single off the bat of freshman Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) set the table for Rosano’s go-ahead hit in the deciding fifth frame of the nightcap for the visiting Buccaneers (7-6, 1-1 MASCAC), who added a pair of key insurance tallies in the inning on a second error and an RBI single from sophomore Luke Kondrotas (Barre, Mass.).  Freshman Chris Koch’s (Pittsfield, Mass.) run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth enabled MCLA (9-9, 1-1 MASCAC) to close back to within a pair, but Cooney retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth, and the contest was called due to rain.

Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 3-0 first inning advantage in the nightcap on a two-run single by junior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) that was followed by an RBI single off the bat of senior William Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.), but the Trailblazers evened matters in the second on a three-run triple by freshman Chase Preite (North Adams, Mass.) and took a 5-3 lead in the third on a pair of errors.  The Buccaneers knotted things at 5-5 in the fourth on RBI singles by sophomores Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) and Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.), setting the stage for Rosano’s heroics in the fifth.

Lee added two hits in the nightcap victory for the visitors, who collected 10 hits in the contest in support of junior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.), who allowed five hits and fanned five over the first five innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Cooney added a strikeout as part of his scoreless frame to earn his third save of the season for Massachusetts Maritime.  Sophomore Cody Weaver (Highland, N.Y.) rapped out two hits in the setback for MCLA, as sophomore Ross Miner (Greenfield, Mass.) went the distance on the mound for the Trailblazers to fall to 3-1 on the season.

The hosts grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead in the opener on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Rory Slattery (Pittsfield, Mass.), who extended that margin to 2-0 with a run-scoring single in the third that was followed by Weaver’s RBI double.  The Trailblazers added single tallies in the fifth on Weaver’s RBI single and in the sixth on a run-scoring single from junior Joe Duncan (Dalton, Mass.), but the Buccaneers made things interesting in the seventh when Mulhern singled and scored on Shouldice’s two-run homer (his first of the season) to left center.  Genereux then singled and later scored on an RBI single by sophomore Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.), and the visitors had the tying run at the plate when Gaines induced Rosano to fly out to end the contest.

Slattery went 3-for-4 to pace an 11-hit MCLA attack in the opener, as Weaver and Koch each added two hits and a pair of RBI in support of Gaines, who allowed a pair of earned runs to go with his six strikeouts in evening his mark at 2-2 on the season.  Rosano and Shouldice each had two hits in the opening game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as senior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.) allowed three earned runs and recorded a strikeout over the first 4 1/3 frames to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Emerson in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while MCLA heads to Schenectady, N.Y. to take on Union in a non-league contest that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
