BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in three runs to lift Massachusetts Maritime to an 8-1 nightcap victory over Lyndon State in a split of a non-league college baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as the visiting Hornets used a three-run sixth inning rally to claim a 3-2 triumph in the opener.

The host Buccaneers (2-2) scored in every inning but the sixth in their nightcap win, plating single runs in the first and third and collecting two tallies each in the second, fourth and fifth frames while generating a 12-hit attack.  Sophomore Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) added two hits and an RBI for the winners, who also received a pair of hits off the bat of freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) to go with a run-scoring double by senior William Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) and an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.).  Junior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, as he scattered four hits and fanned three over five innings of work.  Lyndon State (1-4) plated its lone tally of the nightcap on a fifth inning fielder’s choice by sophomore Cody Gage (Newport, R.I.), as junior Shane Fleury (Plainfield, Vt.) allowed five hits and three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work for the Hornets to suffer the setback.

Shouldice’s fielder’s choice groundout in the third inning of the opener staked the Buccaneers to the early lead, as the hosts added an unearned run in the fifth to take a two-run cushion into the late innings.  Lyndon State started its decisive rally with one out in the sixth, as sophomore Michael Cartularo’s (Lyndonville, Vt.) RBI groundout sliced the visitors’ deficit in half with two outs in the frame and Gage scored the tying run on a fielding error.  Sophomore Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.), whose single loaded the bases with one out, plated what proved to be the winning run on a second straight Massachusetts Maritime error, as the hosts left the tying run at first base in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final score.

Cartularo collected two of the Hornets’ five hits in the opening contest in support of senior Shane O’Donnell-Leach (Groton, Vt.), who scattered four hits and allowed a pair of unearned runs in going the distance to present Lyndon State Head Coach Ed Poland Jr. with his first career victory.  Lee, Mulhern, junior Hunter Horton (Wareham, Mass.) and sophomore Jonathan Moffitt (Lake Mary, Fla.) each recorded singles in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as senior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.) allowed five hits and an earned run in six innings on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Rivier in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Lyndon State will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Hornets travel to Castleton, Vt. to take on Castleton in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader that begins at 2:00 p.m.
