Men's Soccer: Sanchez Scores First Career Goal in Loss to Owls

WESTFIELD, Mass -- The Buccaneers took on Westfield State in conference play on Saturday afternoon. With both teams winless in conference coming in, it was an evenly matched game that saw the Buccaneers take an early lead which the Owls erased as the game went on. Ultimately, Westfield took the conference win, 3-1.

Jesus Sanchez scored his first career goal in the match on a free kick that bounced around the box until he was able to put it in the back of the net. Quinn Kelly made nine saves in goal and allowed the three Owls goals.

Matthew Allen, Carter Hebert and Bryant Keeney were the goal scorers for Westfield. Matthew Elmasian, Hebert, and Ryan Denehy each had an assist in the win. Goalkeeper Emilio Mancuson made 10 saves and allowed the Buccaneer goal.

Sanchez put the Bucs up very early, finding the back of the net in the third minute. Maritime held their lead for a little over 20 minutes then, Hebert brought the game even on a pass from Denehy in the 25th minute. 11 minutes later, the Owls would take the lead on Allen's goal in the 26th minute, which would end up being the game winner.

In the second half, Keeney extended the lead and sealed the win for Westfield with a goal in the 73rd minute on a shot to the back post after a corner kick.

Maritime outshot the Owls 26-20 and had two more corners, 5-3, in the match.

The Buccaneers are back on the road on Monday, October 10th when they take on Mitchell College in Connecticut at 1pm in non-conference play.
