Men's Soccer: Buccaneers Draw with Fitchburg in MASCAC Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers Men's Soccer team opened Homecoming Weekend at the Academy with a conference opening match against Fitchburg State on Friday at Clean Harbors Stadium. The Bucs took an early lead in the 26th minute on a Luke Twomey score. The Falcons leveled the score in the 71st minute and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Twomey scored his second goal of the season in the 26th minute on a cross from McNeill Somers. The assist was Somers' first of 2022 and his first career assist for the Buccaneers. Goalkeeper Quin Kelly made five saves in the draw and allowed the Fitchburg goal.

The Falcons goal came from Juan Sambrano in the 71st minute on a pass from Gabriel Teixeira. It was the third goal in five games for the Falcons. Goalkeeper Collin Robson made six saves in the draw and allowed the Somers goal.

Maritime more than doubled up the Falcons in shots, 24-11, and had five corner kicks to Fitchburg's four.

Twome scored his goal in the first half and the Bucs protected the lead for 25 minutes. The Falcons broke through with 19 minutes to play on Sambrano's score. The Buccaneers had a handful of chances in the final minutes of the game but were unable to break the tie giving a point to each team in the conference.

The Buccaneers are back on their home pitch on Tuesday, September 20th against Salve Regina in non-conference play.
