Buccaneers Spook Vikings in Salem

SALEM, Mass -- Coming off their overtime win over conference leaders West Conn on Saturday, men's lacrosse traveled to Salem to take on Salem State in another conference game, this time against the last placed Vikings. The Bucs put up 24 goals and won by 20, 24-4. In the win, the Buccaneers took an astounding 91 shots with 55 on target.

Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida led all scorers with five goals. Braeden Kosiewicz scored four times; Gage Coolahan and Ryan Cameron netted three goals apiece.
  • Seven other Buccaneers scored one goal in the win.
  • Jack Iversen had eight assists on the night, one less than his career-high of nine from last week's win over Eastern Connecticut.
  • Coolahan and Ryan McDonough both recorded two helpers. Eight other Bucs had one assist in the game.
  • Brian Rosher led the game in the ground ball department with nine and he won 14-of-19 faceoffs in the win.
  • Defensively, the Bucs were credited with 37 caused turnovers in the game. Patrick Doyle recorded a game-high five and multiple other Bucs had multi-caused turnover games.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 73 ground balls, were successful on 11-of-11 clears, won 25-of-32 faceoffs, and took a total of 91 shots in the victory.

Salem

  • Lake Fleming scored twice and Erik Magner and Aidan Hollingsworth scored once to round out the scoring for the Vikings.
  • Dakota Girard recorded two assists, Hollingsworth and Myles Despres each had one.
  • Glen-Thanh Doan had four ground balls to lead Salem.
  • Defensively, the Vikings had 16 caused turnovers. 
  • In total, Salem picked up 19 ground balls, were successful on 12-of-23 clears, won 7-of-32 faceoffs, and took 28 shots in the game.

How It Happened

It was all Bucs in this Little East Conference matchup in Salem on Tuesday night with the Bucs opening the scoring 31 seconds in from Daniel Kane. Kosiewic scored his first at 12:34 to make it 2-0 Bucs. Salem scored at 10:47 to pull within one, 2-1. The Bucs scored four more goals in the quarter to take a 6-1 lead after one.

The Vikings scored first in the second quarter at 13:11 to bring the score to 6-2. Iversen netted a goal at 10:58 to make it a five-goal lead again at 10:58 then Coolahan scored to make it a six-goal lead at 8:48. Salem got a goal from Hollingsworth at 6:31 and the Bucs lead was back to five. Maritime scored four from 6:01 to the final second of the half to bring a 12-3 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Buccaneers scored nine goals unanswered and didn't allow Salem to score in the quarter. After three quarters of play the Bucs led 21-3.

In the fourth, the Bucs scored the first three goals of the period from 14:10 to 6:30 including a short-handed goal from Nick Leander. The goal from Leander extended the Bucs scoring streak to 15 unanswered. With 1:51 left in the game, Fleming netted the Vikings fourth goal. The Bucs ran out the clock and headed home with a 24-4 victory in conference.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will be home on Friday to take on Castleton in LEC play in their final regular season game and it will be senior night for the Bucs. Face Off is at 7pm.
