Men's Lax Wins Conference Opener over USM

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers welcomed Southern Maine to rainy Taylor's Point on Friday evening for the opening game of Little East Conference play for both teams. The Bucs, looking to get off of a three-game skid did just that with a convincing 20-11 win over the Huskies.

Maritime

  • Daniel Kane led all players with five goals in the game.
  • Mitchell Maida scored four times for the Bucs.
  • Ryan CameronGage CoolahanBraeden KosiewiczDoug Walker, and Ryan McDonough all scored twice.
  • Cooper Barrett rounded out the scoring for the Bucs with one goal.
  • Coolahan led all players with six assists. Maida added five helpers.
  • Jack Iversen had three assists in the win. Cameron, Kane, Kosiewicz, and McDonough all had one assist.
  • James Cassidy and Jack Schrier led all players with six ground balls each. 
  • On the draw, Schrier won 16-of-29 faceoffs while Cassidy won 6-of-6.
  • Defensively, Patrick Doyle caused five turnovers in the win.
  • In total, the Buccaneers picked up 45 ground balls, were successful on 21-of-26 clears, won 22-of-35 faceoffs and took a total of 50 shots.

Southern Maine

  • Omar Contreras scored four goals to lead the Huskies.
  • Tucker Nussinow and Schuyler Wetmore each scored twice.
  • Aman Zusner, Nick James, and Nolan Brennan each scored once. 
  • James recorded three assists for USM, Zusner added two.
  • Nussinow, Cruise Lizotte-Johnson, Contreras, and Wetmore each had one assist.
  • Luke Gagner picked up a game-high six ground balls.
  • On the draw, Cayden Poisson-Bragdon won 12-of-32 faceoffs.
  • Defensively, six different Huskies caused turnovers.
  • In total, the Huskies picked up 28 ground balls, were successful on 19-of-24 clears, won 13-of-35 faceoffs, and took 34 shots in the game.

How It Happened

Maritime controlled the first quarter and much of the game as they opened the scoring 34 seconds in on a Coolahan goal from Iversen to make it 1-0. Maritime went on to score four more unanswered, including two in a 31-second span from Cameron and Walker, to make the score 5-0 with 6:32 left in the first. Southern Maine got on the board on a power play goal by Wetmore at 5:30. The Bucs went on to score two more before the quarter ended and led 7-1 at the end of the first.

In the second, the Huskies scored the first two of the quarter at 11:44 and 11:05 to make it 7-3. Walker and Cameron scored back-to-back goals at 6:04 and 4:42 to put the Buccaneers up by six goals, 9-3. USM then scored twice from Zusner and Contraras at 3:42 and 3:11 to pull within four with just over three minutes in the half. To close out the second, Maritime scored at 2:40 and 2:04 from Maida and Kane and went to the halftime break with an 11-5 advantage over the Huskies.

In the third quarter, the Huskies outscored the Bucs 3-2 scoring goals at 9:32, 3:26 and 2:43. Maritime scored twice in the middle of those goals at 7:34 and 3:44 from Kane and Maida. The Buccaneers led by five, 13-8, at the end of three quarters of play.

The Fourth quarter was filled with goals, 10 in total, with seven from Maritime and three from USM. The Bucs scored two to open the quarter, from Maida and Kane again, to go up 15-8. Southern Maine got one back from Nussinow at 12:35 to make the score 15-9 but the Bucs scored back-to-back again, this time two from Kosiewicz, to go up 17-9. The Huskies got another from Contreras at 7:32 to hit double digits. Then, the Buccaneers scored three in a row from Coolahan, Kane and Barrett to go up 20-10. Contreras added one more with 42 second left in the game and the Bucs walked away with the conference victory, 20-11, over the Huskies.

The Buccaneers take to the road next week for a conference game against Keene State in New Hampshire with faceoff against the Owls set for 6pm.
