Buccaneers Win Big over Warriors in Conference Play

WILLIMANTIC, Conn -- The Buccaneers traveled to Connecticut on Thursday for a matinee conference game against the Eastern Connecticut Warriors. 2-0 against ECSU last season, the Buccaneers kept their run going, winning big on Thursday by a final of 18-7.

In The Field

Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida led all players in the game with seven goals while also recording two assists. Mitch also led the game in caused turnovers defensively.
  • Ryan McDonough scored three goals in the win.
  • Daniel Kane and Cooper Barrett netted two scores. Ryan CameronJack Iversen, and Kyle Shanahan each scored once.
  • Kane had two assists and Leo Allgaier had one helper.
  • Brian Rosher led the team in ground balls with seven and won 14-of-26 faceoffs.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 45 ground balls, were successful on 19-of-26 clears, won 15-of-28 faceoffs, and took 54 total shots.

Eastern Connecticut

  • Garrett Lapham and Mike Stevenson each scored three times. Jonathan Bernier rounded out the scoring for ECSU.
  • Dan Barron, Quinn O'Connor, Lapham, Stevenson, and Bernier each had one assist.
  • Ryan Stocks led the game with eight ground balls.
  • Rick O'Neal won 10-of-19 faceoffs he took.
  • Defensively, Stocks led the team with three caused turnovers.
  • In total, the Warriors picked up 36 ground balls, were successful on 18-of-29 clears attempts, won 13-of-28 faceoffs, and took 32 total shots.

How It Happened

Eastern Connecticut scored the first 47 seconds into the game on a Stevenson goal. Maritime matched it less than two minutes later on Maida's first. ECSU took a lead again at 8:32 on a Lapham goal and that would be the last time they would lead. The Buccaneers scored four to close out the first quarter of play with one from Iversen, one from Cameron and two from Maida in the last 37 seconds of the quarter. The Bucs led 5-2 after one.

In the second, Eastern Connecticut scored 31 seconds in to make it 5-3. Maritime would keep their opponents off the board the rest of the hald and score five goals of their own. McDonough scored his first at 13:39 followed by two from Maida at 10:10 and 3:40. Coolahan scored at 2:24 and McDonough closed out the half with his second at 46 seconds. Maritime led 10-3 at the half.

In the third, the Bucs outscored ECSU 5-1 once again. Maida and Kane each scored in the opening minute. Barrett scored to make it 13-3. East Conn got another from Lapham at 9:45 to make it 13-4. Kane and Barrett scored at 6:41 and 6:04 for the last two scores of the third quarter and the Bucs led 15-4 at the end of three.

Each team scored three times in the fourth quarter with the Bucs scoring the first two. Maida scored again at 14:11 followed by a power play goal from McDonough at 7:19. Eastern Connecticut scored twice at 6:06 and 3:52 to make it 17-7. Shanahan netted his first Buccaneers goal at 1:31 and Stevenson scored off the faceoff at 1:24 to bring us to the final score of Buccaneers 18, Warriors 7.
