Bucs Lose First Game of the Season to Raiders at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers played host to the Rivier Raiders on Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup. The Bucs were 3-0 coming into the game while the Raiders were 2-1. On this day, Rivier got the better of the Buccaneers by a final of 13-9.

Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida led all Bucs with three goals and added two assists.
  • Jack Iversen scored two goals and recorded two assists.
  • Daniel Kane and Ryan McDonough each scored twice with one assist.
  • Leo Allgaier added an assist for the Bucs in the loss.
  • Bucs face off guy Brian Rosher led all players with seven ground balls and won 18-of-25 faceoffs.
  • Defensively, Maida and Jack O'Donnell each caused two turnovers for Maritime.

  • Ference picked up a team-high five ground balls for the Raiders. 
  • Defensively, Brendan Keegan caused a game-high three turnovers.
  • In total, the Raiders picked up 27 ground balls, were successful on 21-of-28 clears, won 7-of-25 faceoffs, and took 28 total shots.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored first in the first quarter on a Maide goal from McDonough less than five minutes in. Maide scored again from Allgaier at the 7:37 mark to give the Bucs a 2-0 advantage. Rivier added a goal at 4:55 on a power play from Heitmiller to cut the Buccaneers lead in half. The quarter ended with Maritime on top, 2-1.

In the second, The Bucs opened the scoring again on a goal from Iversen. Rivier scored their second at 7:59 to keep it within one. The Buccaneers got another from Maida at 5:18 to extend the lead back to two goals. That lead would last for just over a minute when Mercier scored at 4:09 and again at 2:42 to tie the game at 4-4. Maritime got the last laugh in the second on Kane's second with just under two minutes remaining to give the Buccaneers a 5-4 lead headed to half time.

In the third, Maritime opened the scoring once again on an Iversen goal from Maida. The teams traded goals with the Raiders scoring at 8:59 and the Bucs scoring 30 seconds later on Iversen's second of the quarter. Down 7-5, Rivier scored twice to even the score at 7-7 with the second goal coming from Reilly with 1:34 left. McDonough broke the tie with 43 seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Bucs an 8-7 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth, the Raiders defense stood strong only allowing one Maritime goal and giving their offense the ability to net six. Rivier scored the first four goals of the quarter to take an 11-8 lead. Maritime scored with 5:04 left to make it 11-9. Rivier went on to score two more at 1:53 and 41 second to take a 13-9 advantage which would go on to be the final score.

The Bucs are off until Wednesday, March 22nd when they travel to Rhode Island to take on Salve Regina in their final non-conference tune up before LEC play begins next weekend.
